Just an Oscar Grouch

I admit it. I don’t get the Oscars. Actually, that’s not true. I’m okay with the Oscars. I don’t get the other seventy-two thousand award shows. I mean it’s a bit ridiculous, isn’t it?

One for movies, one for television, one for music. Okay, I could deal with that. But then you get one for cable television, another one for movies, one for a particular sport, one for a particular kind of music, another one for a cable television channel. The list goes on and on. And on.

But what really gets me is that it isn’t like these people need any more publicity, or another bag full of thousands of dollars of goodies that will probably end up in the trash. Seriously.

I’m sure that actors, athletes and musicians have very difficult lives compared to the rest of us, and their are lives so challenging, and the things they give up so important that they deserve all the accolades that they can get. Not to mention the moola.

But we eventually reach a point where it’s more like rubbing our noses in it. Oh, sorry, you can’t pay me $9.3 million this year, I’m going to go over here, where they’ll show me the love I deserve.

According to one site, median household income in 2002 was nearly $80,000 per year. Even if that number holds true for the next thirty years, a family making that sort of money will have generated only $2.4 million in their entire lives.

Today’s celebrities make that every month or so, and grumble when they only earn half that! Doesn’t anyone see the disconnect here? Instead of putting these people on pedestals and throwing them even more money, giving them endorsement deals where they can get even more money, how about a show that includes an award for the plumber with the least amount of butt crack showing? Or maybe an episode of Biography on the lunch lady?

Not only would we live in a better world, the costs would be so much cheaper. No longer would you need a bag full of $20,000 in goodies. You could make do with a recliner, a six-pack and a bag of chips.

  • I'm with Ted. Can't stand those programs; especially the Oscars. Everything is so pompous. Then again, I rarely go to the movies or watch the new releases.

That's not to say there aren't some good actors out there. I just don't care about being current with American culture either with movies or records.

I don't watch award shows, but I heard this morning that it got a high rating. I guess somebody watches that stuff.
