Shows: Annual Idolization

Somehow, we seem to get sucked into American Idol every year. Usually it's something that we just have to see during the auditions. Then we need to know who gets cut. Then see the songs each week. Finally we've gone through the whole thing again. This year is especially painful. Three nights a week? I think that's just too much.

Still, we watch.

While last week the men did very well, they weren't too good this week. This week the women took over. Some excellent performances and some so-so performances.

For starters, I was amazed at Carrie Underwood's voice once again. Unfortunately I have to agree with the judges and say that she didn't wow me. She's got the voice, but she needs to find her personality again. She misplaced it somewhere along the line. And what was up with her zodiac bit: "I'm a Pisces, which is a fish, which is good because I like to fish". What sort of logic is that? I like chickens, which is good because I enjoy a good cockfight now and again?

Nonetheless, I'd like her to do well. She seems very down-to-earth, and her comments in her bio are nice. She'd thank God, which is cool. But you really have to wonder: Does someone else buy her underwear for her, or does she go commando?

Jessica Sierra was awesome on all counts. I didn't dig her song last week, but it was okay. This week was just excellent. And Simon's tongue-in-cheek commentary just made it that much more fun. I don't get why she insists on wearing what appear to be maternity shirts. Perhaps she's pregnant, I don't know, but I didn't see that anywhere and she seems to enjoy dressing for the most part, but I just don't get that part. Jessica, if you are pregnant, congratulations and my apologies. Dress as you like.

I also enjoyed Vonzell Solomon for the first time, cowgirl getup and all. I thought she did well. She also would thank God, and mentions praying more than once in her bio. Interestingly, she's released a CD. Don't know why that surprises me - guess I always thought American Idols were all amateurs.

I even got into Nadia "Brillohead" Turner as well. And I say "Brillohead" with the most love imaginable. It isn't a slam in any way - that's just what I think of when I see her head. Perhaps "Brillohair" would be better. I don't know. She also mentions thanking God in her bio.

Lindsey Cardinale had a nice rendition of I Don't Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith, and I like her husky voice (again like the judges), but I'm not sure how well she'll do in the competition. It's unique, but people don't really want unique. They want fun and enjoyable. The two don't always go together.

Amanda Avila was okay, I don't really think I like Janay Castine and I just don't know about Mikalah Gordon. I really liked her song last week, in a club-type setting, but this week I didn't really get it again. We'll just have to see how it goes tonight.

The wife is infatuated with this thing and I have taken up reading. What was hard is I don't mind watching the women sing, but to have a whole night of just the men sucks. It will be nice to see them all together on the same night this week, but I will still have my book.
