Last night on American Idol, the theme was musicals. I wasn’t sure what to think. In the end, I’m not sure that it was a very good choice. Rather, I think that the song choices were not particularly good. I was disappointed, as I actually like (at least some) musicals. The song choices, as Randy might say, just didn’t do it for me.
As usual, Carrie Underwood demonstrated her amazing voice, and it was quite a performance, though she didn’t really perform so much as sing. If she could channel a bit of Constantine Maroulis into her own energy and stage presence, I think Carrie could win easily. Bo Bice may very well be her only real competition, but that’s only if he can do a bit better job at choosing his songs.
Speaking of Constantine, he’s growing on me, though I still think he is a bit too hammy on stage. Maybe he can actually give Carrie some of that bacon (and rid himself of it), rather than teaching it to her. That would improve her skills and his at the same time, and perhaps make for a three-way race.
Vonzell Solomon has also shown flashes of talent. I’d be surprised if she wasn’t among the final four with those other three. Wasn’t she the one who nearly missed her audition by getting on the wrong bus? Talk about a turnaround.
As much as I’d like to see someone as unconventional as Scott Savol pull off the win, I just don’t think it’ll happen. Perhaps if Ruben didn’t win previously, but even then it would be a stretch. Anthony Fedorov has a decent enough voice, but seems to be going through the Clay Aiken school of makeovers. I think that will hurt him in the end more than it will help.
Then we get to Nadia Turner, Anwar Robinson and Nikko Smith. As much as I want to cheer on Nikko for his comeback, I’m just not an R&B guy – and that’s about all I’ve seen out of him. His voice seems good, I’d just like to see some variety. The other two just don’t do anything for me, though Nadia’s hair can be entertaining. Too bad she doesn’t have the voice to go with it.
