Shows: The Power of Advertising
We were watching television the other night, and were struck by the oddity of a new car commercial. I think this was a Mazda commercial, but (luckily) I haven't seen it since. It involved a bunch of people dressed in tight black suits on a flesh-colored background. Turns out they were supposed to be hairs on the arm (and later the neck) of people, and would stand up to show their excitement.
The commercial was just bizarre. I think it's safe to say that, while I may not ever buy a Mazda, I probably will remember who it was. Maybe that's a good thing.
On the other end of the spectrum was a commercial from (I believe) Toyota. It was a crash-test facility, and this control tower in the middle of the facility had an older gentleman and a couple of kids. The kids were egging him on to "crash another one". Very good. The best part was probably at the end, when this older man said he was out of cars and one of the kids asked: "How about your car?"
Again probably unlikely that it will influence my buying decision much, as I really don't pay a whole lot of attention to advertising anyway. But it's just amazing that two such similar products (that is, vehicles) can have such wildly different commercials.

Did you notice that, in the Toyota commercial, not once did they actually show the vehicles crash? They cut away just before impact every time. Don't know why I found this so annoying but it bothers me every time I see it.

Actually, I did notice that. I didn't want to seem too anal by mentioning it though. :)
