Shows: Joyce and Uchenna Win

Talk about comebacks. Despite finishing a few minutes behind the other teams in the first leg of last night's The Amazing Race finale (#7 if you are keeping track), and having to give up all their possessions, and more importantly money, Joyce and Uchenna accomplished the improbable and snatched victory from Rob and Amber's hands by a decent margin.

Despite all the luck Team Romber shared throughout the race, last night that luck ran out. While the final clue lay (apparently) around 11th street, they were searching aimlessly 16 or so blocks away. Joyce and Uchenna finally picked up the break they needed and that was it.

Even thoughttp://www.everitz.com/mt-static/images/formatting-icons/bold.gif
Boldh Uchenna insisted on paying off the driver of the cab, which meant that they had to wait and wait to find the money that they needed prior to going in to the final Pit Stop, and an agonizing few moments that took forever, they pulled off the win. While with the editing it is difficult to say, it looked like they finished well ahead of Rob and , and easily in front of Ron and Kelly, who were on a flight two hours later.

It was good to see the "good guys" win. Joyce and Uchenna were supportive of one another, and in fact the other teams, throughout the race. The openly spoke of their faith in the final leg. Even stopping to pay off the cabbie instead of running for the finish line was a nice touch. Of course, that might be a rule of the race since the previous Colin incident - it was still a stand-up thing to do.

I thought the bigger break was American Airlines pulling the plane back and letting JOCHENA onto the plane.

Had that not happened ROMBER walk away with the easy victory.

Good season overall.

Becky and I were literally standing on our feet at the end of the show last night, physically cheering them on as they got toward the end. Wow.

I drew a bunch of parallels between Uchenna and Joyce, and Chip and Kim two seasons ago:

* Our favorite teams nearly from the beginning
* People we'd actually want to be friends with
* Generally healthy marriage relationship
* Good teamwork
* Mutual respect
* Miraculously came from behind to win the race
* Defeated young, brash, successful teams who were generally favored to win (Rob&Amber, Colin&Christie)
* Of African ancestry
* Of Christian faith

On an unrelated note, I also thought it was interesting how their route this season so obviously avoided southeast Asia, presumably due to the tsunami devastation.

Peter ... good point about SE Asia. They did go to India, but nothing exotic.

My favorite teams from day one were Romber and Jochena. Unlike previous seasons I really didn't hate any team, though I really disliked Ron and Kelly.

I disliked Rob and Amber on principle. Didn't like 'em in Survivor, didn't like 'em in AR. That's not to say that I don't think they were good competitors, I just don't particularly care for them as people. Especially Boston Rob, with his wicked pissah Boston accent (though I did notice that at the very very end, he actually pronounced Amber as "Amber" instead of "Ambuh").

Peter, good points - though I still recall that Chip & Kim towards the end were portrayed, rightly or wrongly, differently than they had been for most of the race. They suddenly turned "evil", not as easygoing as they had been.

Joyce and Uchenna, meanwhile, had no such revelation - though it could always be that the editing was done in such a way as to not make that appearance this time.

And while I don't think I'd particularly care to have Rob & Amber as friends, they do make for entertaining TV...

I'm glad Joyce and Uchenna won last night, but COME ON!
How does the airline benefit from adding two more passengers on that flight? You're telling me the producers didn't step in and say, "Wait a minute, Rob and Amber are going to be at least an hour ahead of them, the race will be over, we've got to get two teams on one flight, it'll be good TV"
I love the show, but little things like that and the flat tire being changed faster then an indy car pit crew get me a little frustrated.

Good points, Bobby. While other "incidents" take hours to resolve (think rolled Land Rover), that flat tire took nothing at all.

And while I have had an airline re-open a closed airplane door, I have never had them re-extend the jetway to do so.

For the most part, Amazing Race has proven that people will do just about anything to look good in front of a TV camera, whether it's re-opening a flight, handing over cash, or giving extra special service.

There are odd moments, though, when the TV camera seems to make people do the opposite - prove that, when given the opportunity to be helpful, they will assert their individuality and say "No way! I don't have to help you, so I'm not gonna!"

"Good points, Bobby. While other "incidents" take hours to resolve (think rolled Land Rover), that flat tire took nothing at all."

Editing. It could have taken much longer. I always look for the sun and shadows to see what time it really is on the show. lol

"And while I have had an airline re-open a closed airplane door, I have never had them re-extend the jetway to do so."

I had it happen at the end of last year on a connecting flight. Of course, there were ten of us who missed the connection.

To me what it makes it interesting is that they have to buy a ticket for their crew on flights. This was according to a local radio interview with the brothers the week after they were knocked out.

Heh. True enough - editing can definitely play a part. Mostly thinking that the brothers seemed to be in the desert for hours, and in any case lost quite a bit of ground.

Meanwhile, Joyce and Uchenna's flat tire came when they were only marginally ahead, and was fixed in time for them to jump back in rather quickly. While an exact time will never be known, it just seems amazing to me that it was fixed so quickly, when even a simple stop for gas can take so long (editing again, I realize)!
