Shows: The Power of Advertising

We were watching television the other night, and were struck by the oddity of a new car commercial. I think this was a Mazda commercial, but (luckily) I haven't seen it since. It involved a bunch of people dressed in tight black suits on a flesh-colored background. Turns out they were supposed to be hairs on the arm (and later the neck) of people, and would stand up to show their excitement.

The commercial was just bizarre. I think it's safe to say that, while I may not ever buy a Mazda, I probably will remember who it was. Maybe that's a good thing.

Shows: Joyce and Uchenna Win

Talk about comebacks. Despite finishing a few minutes behind the other teams in the first leg of last night's The Amazing Race finale (#7 if you are keeping track), and having to give up all their possessions, and more importantly money, Joyce and Uchenna accomplished the improbable and snatched victory from Rob and Amber's hands by a decent margin.

Despite all the luck Team Romber shared throughout the race, last night that luck ran out. While the final clue lay (apparently) around 11th street, they were searching aimlessly 16 or so blocks away. Joyce and Uchenna finally picked up the break they needed and that was it.

Shows: American Idol Countdown

With just four contestants left, last night's performances were surprisingly weak. Even Bo, who is clearly the superior single contestant, had a bad song - though as far as I can tell he performed it well. It just wasn't very good.

Carrie is also generally head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd, but last night she looked eerily... human. I thought that she did the Dixie Chicks song very well, but that rendition of If You Don't Know Me made me feel like I didn't really want to know her. Blech.

Shows: Finalizing Idol

Last night was easily won by Bo Bice, and especially his rendition of Badlands' In a Dream, performed without musical accompaniment. This was, quite possibly, his best performance of the year - and he didn't even have any music to go with it. I think this just sealed his win, even though there is another vote next week.

Shows: Get Rich Quick

Does it seem odd to anyone that so many hucksters are on TV (or in the paper, or on the internet), eager to share with you the secrets of how they made it big? Wouldn't it seem to make more sense, that if so much money were to be made, and if it were such a wonderful choice, that they would be out doing it themselves, rather than trying to sucker you into buying?

Shows: Then There Were Two

Well over a month ago, I predicted that we'd see Bo and Carrie in the finals of American Idol. Not that it was difficult or anything. But while Carrie has lagged a bit of late, Bo has really turned up the heat - especially with his a capella performance of In a Dream this week.

Unless Carrie can find some serious personality before next week's finale, I suspect (as my wife has all season) that Bo will walk away with the top prize this year. Of course, that doesn't mean that Carrie won't do well - merely that she won't get the title.

Shows: Lost in Lost

I've recently picked up on Lost. I think it's the first ABC show that I've watched with any regularity since Alias. Wait, that's not true. I do like According to Jim too.

Anyway, I've been trying to catch up, and I think I've done a pretty reasonable job of getting up-to-speed on things. The tale seems to be an interesting one. The problem that I'm running into now is that it reminds me of other J.J. Abrams productions.
