The Amazing Race Recap: Sao Paolo, Brazil

Another season – the ninth, if you are keeping track at home – of The Amazing Race has kicked off, this time not in somewhere like Los Angeles or New York, but Denver (actually outside Denver, but Denver is the closest place most people have heard of, so let’s keep it simple).

The eleven teams this time around are spread across most pairings that you would think of (and some you might not), such as a married couple, a pair of hippies – actually there could be more than one pair, but one really looks the part – sexy women, determined athletic types and even some nerds thrown in for good measure.

In this first leg of the race, it seems that someone has been studying up on poetry, because each of the steps has the racers figuring out where to go next based on the contents of a poem.  First up, they take a flight – or one flight from several – to get themselves to a rather unique hotel in Sao Paolo.  Once there, they encounter the first challenge, Motorhead or Rotorhead.

In Motorhead, teams have to put together – or finish putting together – a motorcycle.  In Rotorhead, they have to take a helicopter ride to a tall building and look for clues.  As one might expect, the latter task seems to be a bit simpler, as teams do not realize that they are putting together a real motorcycle, not a puzzle or toy or something.  Once the task is completed, they move on to the pit stop.

John and Scott were eliminated here, and frankly, I had almost no idea who they were.  It looks to me like the hippies (er… the hippies that look like hippies) are the ones that have the early advantage.
