I think this is my favorite episode of the series thus far. Bruce Davison is in a great role here (actually all his appearances in the series are quite good). I only remember him from one other appearance, but it seems this is his fourth go-round so far. I just hope that he has more.
The prosecution seems to have things wrapped up right in the beginning, but an overzealous officer doesn’t allow the suspect to get a lawyer, so they lose the confession. Hellman (Davison) runs with it, pointing the finger at the wife instead. Even an affair with the wife’s mother (that’s right, the guy was sleeping with his mother-in-law) doesn’t seem to seal the deal.
This episode had me hook, line and sinker. I just knew that this was going to be the episode where Annabeth finally lost, where Hellman had raised enough of a doubt, the jury went the other way and the guy got off scot-free. Time after time, points for the prosecution are not only turned away from the defendant, but end up pointing right back at them.
In the end, well, let’s just say that she doesn’t quite lose, but Hellman nailed it all along, and he gets his doubt. The guy goes to jail, but not for nearly as long as he probably should. Just keep in mind that it might not come from the source you are expecting.
