Close to Home Recap: Escape
While this episode had most of the drama of the regular series, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in the storyline. This isn't because it was a bad story, because it wasn't. But for whatever reason, I knew within the first few minutes just what would happen throughout the show, which is extremely unlikely for me when watching this particular show. It doesn't mean it isn't worth watching. It just means that I hope that they aren't losing their touch.
At the beginning we saw a crime in process - a jewelery store being robbed - and we saw the thief apprehended, and we even saw right off that he was caught red-handed. The first surprise was that he was one of Annabeth's first cases, and she struck a deal to get him behind bars, something that apparently never sat quite right with her. The second surprise was that he had escaped about a year ago when he allegedly killed someone in prison and kidnapped a woman from the prison in order to escape.
What came next was that the woman he had "kidnapped" was perhaps not so much a victim as a willing particpant in the whole thing, and perhaps the victim was in fact the guy who was being charged in the first place. Now don't get me wrong, I don't for an instant think that he wasn't guilty of something. But this was set up a mile away.
And the whole idea that the prosecuting team 'could be beat' wasn't a bad one - I liked how it seemed to play off of the recent Reasonable Doubts episode (which I loved), showing a chink in their formidable armor. But something just seemed to be missing, and I couldn't get my head around it. Rather, I could get my head around it, and I saw this one coming the whole way. I hope this is an anomaly.
