The Amazing Race Recap: Munich, Germany

This two-part leg (started last week in Moscow, Russia) came to a conclusion with mother-daughter team Wanda and Desiree being eliminated as they couldn't keep up with Dani and Danielle as they made their way to the finish line. Strangely, the two teams seemed to spend all sorts of time circling the autobahn on the outskirts of Munich, but it would have been Dani and Danielle who most benefitted getting out of that cycle, since they were following the other two.

In the rest of the race, pepetual jokesters BJ and Tyler moved from a fourth place "finish" at the halfway point in the stage to a second place finish this week, mostly by virtue of a lucky flight connection from Moscow to Munich. Apparently they were standing at a ticket window which was closed, then opened and sold them their tickets, while people standing at other windows, which may or may not have been open, did not get theirs. A little odd, to be sure. But I'm glad they made it.

While it won't be easy to tell until the racers leave their next destination, it looks like the producers might be in for a bit of a pickle as some teams appear to have at least a several hour lead on the other teams (those that didn't make the flight cutoff). While waiting for attractions to open and flights to take off and the like can trim such differences, it will be interesting to see both how much of a difference that window is, and if the producers try to trim it down at all.

In an early race, the final leg was down to two teams early on when the third-place team missed a connection in Hawaii (or somewhere similar), so it may be that the top few teams race 'on their own' for a while.

It is good to see the race back around the world. Or maybe it's the 'adult' version that's fun. Certainly something about last season's family version, while we still watched it, just wasn't as interesting. It's good to see the old race back again.

Update: I can't believe that I almost forgot this bit, but did anyone see BJ and Tyler tip Phil when they reached the halfway point? That was sweet. And just a few moments later (about 9 minutes in, if you're on your Tivo), what is presumably the Philips sign on top of the building is lighting up one letter at a time to reveal P... H... I... L. Nice editing job. If you missed it, check out Subliminal Phil.
