Mythbusters Recap: Exploding Jawbreaker
Exploding Jawbreaker. Before tonight, I had never even heard of this myth. I guess I'm just not the jawbreaker type. In any case, apparently the problem is that some of these beasts are known to explode in certain instances, causing severe burns - often to the face, since that is where the jawbreaker is headed. Since there are reported cases of this actually happening, the team set about finding ways that this could actually happen, as opposed to trying to determine if it could happen or not.
The first, and probably the most common, method for causing such an explosion is for the jawbreaker to be heated (likely in a microwave). Because of the different layers, this can result in a solid outside but a liquid inside, which in turn can explode under certain circumstances - and in fact burned Christine during one experiment. Other methods for explosion included chemical reactions, likely due to improper - or incomplete - mixing processes during manufacturing. Confirmed.
Static Cannon. After this was confirmed, the guys turned their attention to the myth of the 'static cannon', whereby shooting a PVC pipe with a sand blaster would generate a static charge so huge that, when discarged, it would kill someone. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything, even after Adam painted the pipe. PVC just can't store the static. So they built their own static generator as well, and while they did build up a charge that way, it wasn't nearly enough to kill someone (the team did have some fun with Adam though). Busted.
Killer Deck. The final myth of this episode was the myth of killing someone with a playing card. While it is possible to throw a playing card with some force - a skill that is, in fact, possessed by Adam - it was pretty well busted that you can kill someone, because the card simply doesn't have the mass to penetrate skin. Jamie even stood in front of the target, and you know that means something, because Jamie's a bit of a wimp and wouldn't have been likely to have done so if he was in real danger. Still, the cards did draw blood. They just didn't do much more than that. Busted.
As this was an older episode, all three myths were actually done by Adam and Jamie (with help from the build team), as opposed to the newer style of breaking them out into a couple of teams. Not that that matters, I just thought I'd record it.
