Mythbusters Recap: Paper Crossbow
Paper Crossbow. Once again we have a myth I hadn't heard previously, this one about a story from a California prison where an inmate built a lethal crossbow and bolt from paper and underwear, then used it against a fellow inmate. In busting this myth, Adam and Jamie took different approaches, so they built their own crossbows out of newspaper and underwear, then compared the results.
Usually when this happens, Jamie does much better than Adam - but this time around Adam out-built Jamie, producing a much more usable weapon. Of course, it was much larger and may not have passed any reasonable bed-check. But it was still a surprising result.
Jamie, meanwhile, did quite a decent job (certainly better than I could have done), but his crossbow was only good for one shot before it crumpled. Not bad, as long as you are a good marksman. Still, the better-built crossbow from Adam only shot two good shots, and hey, we're talking prison - so it's not like they aren't going to know you have it, so maybe a one-shot job isn't a bad idea.
Vodka Myths: Vodka Smoke Remover. The build team tested more vodka myths. First up is to see if vodka works as to remove the smoke smell from clothes. After saturating clothes with the smoke from cigarettes, the clothes were sprayed with a vodka mixture before washing. The vodka clothes smelled slightly better. Plausible.
Vodka Myths: Vodka Bee Killer. Next up is to see if vodka works as a bee killer by spraying bees with a vodka and water mixture. At first, it looks like they just drowned, which would work with any liquid. But in actuality, bees sprayed with water were killed more often than those sprayed with vodka. While all the bees were knocked out, none of those sprayed with vodka were killed. Whoops. Busted.
