Mythbusters Recap: Killer Brace Position

Killer Brace Positions? The title myth checks out the airline's "brace position", where you are told to position yourself in the case of a crash, which has been rumored to be done only because it is more likely to kill you quickly. Are airlines thinking that it's cheaper to pay out for a wrongful death suit than for years of rehab?

While the team unfortunately couldn't do this with a real plane, they were able to build a rig in the parking lot to drop a couple of rows of seats, and the levels of shock recorded to Buster and his family (and also some of the team members) are actually lessened by the brace positions. Cell Phone vs. Drunk Driving. Meanwhile, Adam and Kari go to a driving course to test their reactions - first unimpaired, then while talking on a cell phone, and finally while driving after having a few drinks (stopping short of the .08 limit for being legally intoxicated in California). Their results are interesting, showing that driving reactions while talking on the cell phone are actually worse than those while driving under the influence. Of course, you can put the cell phone down if need be - not that you do, but you can. Confirmed.
