Mythbusters Recap: Scuba Diver, Car Capers

This episode isn't nearly as polished as some of the newer ones you might see, but I still enjoyed it as much as, if not more than, some of the more recent ones.

The first thing you notice is the resident folklorist - she tells you the background of the myth, gives you extra detail, even fills you in on the reasons why a myth might be false, or the original source of a story (if it is known). That's a nice touch.

Forest Fire Scuba Diver. In this particular case, the folklorist tells us about the finding of a scuba diver in the midst of a forest fire - with the assumption being that he died by being scooped up in a fire-fighting aircraft of some sort, then dumped on the flames, where he promptly burned. So that's the challenge.

The team finds out quickly that even the largest fire-fighting aircraft has only a six-inch intake pipe, so it's unlikely that they will hold an entire person, but perhaps it is possible that a suction device, such as one used on some helicopters, would have enough force to hold a scuba diver to the hose, carry them to the fire, then drop them? Let's build one to find out!

As it turns out, such a device might be able to suck the diver to the hose, but once the device comes out of the water, the weight of the diver (Buster in this case) is such that it just doesn't hold. Busted.

Car Capers: Tailpipe Terrors. Meanwhile, in the background, lots of car myths are put to the test. First, things are inserted in the tailpipe (potatoes, bananas), which promptly shoot out of the car, without stalling it out. Blasted cartoons - they are so misleading. Busted.

Car Capers: Unauthorized Additives. Then they try adding things to the gasoline. Liquid drain cleaner doesn't have an effect. Busted. Bleach doesn't do much other than stall the car, but it does oxidize the gas tank - which in turn could cause lots of little rust particles to break loose. Plausible. Adding sugar doesn't do anything even after letting it sit overnight. Busted. Finally, moth balls are added to a mixture, and in this unprofessional test, they seem to help the performance. Plausible.

Car Capers: Shooting Cars. The last round of tests involve guns. In the first set, Jamie shoots at the gas tank, and wouldn't you know it - he's not only a great marksman, hitting the gas tank several times in a row, but the tank doesn't explode! I am so disillusioned right now. Busted. Next, 50 rounds are fired into the driver's door to see if the door is a good place to hide in a gunfight, and once again we've been misled - it looks like nearly every one (if not every one) goes right through. So if you need a place to hide, hide somewhere without guns - the car door just doesn't help. Busted.

The car used in the Car Capers is none other than the Cadillac donated to the show by Cadillac Ben, and it's seen in a number of other episodes. This is where you see it first.
