This week started off with BJ and Tyler showing a whopping hour-and-a-half lead over second place team Eric and Jeremy. It’s not uncommon for that sort of distance between first and last – or even between first and somewhere in the middle. But first and second is usually a lot closer than that.
That doesn’t mean it lasts – as is to be expected, Eric and Jeremy closed the gap since the first stop on this leg didn’t open until 8:30am. Still, it meant that BJ and Tyler were able to relax (albeit in their car) for an extra couple of hours while the other racers scrambled to catch up to them.
With three other teams (Joseph and Monica, Lake and Michelle and even the formerly calm pair of David and Lori) just about at each other’s throats, every peaceful moment is just one more benefit to the easy-going team. I’m not sure they need much more relaxation, but it’s obvious that every little bit helps.
It’s always hard to tell with edited footage, but what was apparent was that the first two teams were done with the first task before anyone else showed up. They then proceeded to the fish market and, apparently, onto the kayak polo challenge and the mat, before the other teams even arrived in the city.
Since the other teams left the pit stop as long as four hours after BJ and Tyler, they ended up in morning rush hour traffic – none of which seemed apparent for the first two teams, so there still may be a decent difference in the front runners and those coming up from behind. But it seems that at least the top two teams are pretty close to one another, with the top two teams having flip-flopped this week. We still like the hippies for the win.
However, it was a sad week to see David and Lori go. It was nice to see nerds make it this far, but last week really seemed to take it all out of them. Even after the disappointment and frustration of the puzzle, they seemed to be at one another this week, and that’s just not good. Of course, being in last place right from the start can’t help either. Maybe we’ll see more nerds in the future, inspired by these two.
