American Idol Recap: Top 8
I was really looking forward to this week, as I happen to really enjoy the music of Queen, the focus for the week. I'm also really impressed that there are still three contestants from North Carolina in the contest, with only 8 contestants left! About all I can say is that I'm sure that there will still be at least two next week.
Paris Bennett
The Show Must Go On
Bucky Covington
Fat Bottomed Girls
Chris Daughtry
Innuendo
Taylor Hicks
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Katharine McPhee
Who Wants to Live Forever
Kellie Pickler
Bohemian Rhapsody
Elliott Yamin
Somebody to Love
Ace Young
We Will Rock You
Kellie Pickler really impressed me with her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't think for a minute that she should be singing this type of song, but I was entertained by watching it, and that's my magic word for the week. I watch this show, and most of the shows on televsion, to be entertained. If I choose to hear great music, I will put something on the stereo. If I want to see something, I want a great visual. While I care about the sound, it also has to look good, and she did both.
The other two contestants from the Old North State didn't wow me. I was impressed that Bucky Covington chose to sing Fat Bottomed Girls. That's just a fun song. But he's a country boy, not a rocker, and I don't think he quite pulled it off. Sorry, Bucky, bottom three for you this week.
The other contestant from North Carolina, one of my two favorites to win it all, Chris Daughtry, disappointed me. This isn't because I think he's a bad vocalist, because he's not. But I wasn't entertained by his performance. As much as I like his talent, I think that America will also be disappointed. Chris, prepare for a visit to the bottom three. But we'll see you again next week.
I thought Ace Young had the best performance I've seen him have thus far, yet I think it was still the worst of the night, because he couldn't get it right and he forgot his words. I think we'll finally see the end of Ace tonight. Elliott Yamin had a good performance and I enjoyed Paris Bennett, despite the strange look to it.
Katharine McPhee made a bad song choice, despite what the judges said. I really would have rather been entertained by her instead of watching her stand there nearly motionless. That said, her voice wowed me, the presentation was incredible, and as the other of my two favorites, I still believe that it's her competition to lose at this point.
Taylor Hicks rounded out the night by coming back to his drunken idol style of singing, and it was a welcome sight. I don't know that it can win, but it was fun, and I was entertained. If anyone can watch him and not be entertained, you ought to turn off the television and go to bed. I hope Taylor Hicks is back for good.
Update: As it turned out, I had another two-out-of-three this week, with Ace and Bucky in the bottom three. But as luck would have it, Ace survived another week. Will he never go home? Bucky was the one who received the lowest number of votes, so he won't be with us next week. Elliott, meanwhile, was the third member of the bottom three.
