In this Christmas send-up, Art Carney plays perpetual drunk Henry Corwin, department store Santa relegated to the unemployment line when he can barely stand. But he happens upon a magic gift bag, which unfortunately gets him in trouble with his ex-boss, who thinks he stole the goods from his former job. Alas, when they look, it just contains garbage (thus the magic part of the bag).

But then he pulls out more and more magic gifts, just what everyone wants – until the bag is empty. Yet there is no magic for Corwin, who wants to be the biggest gift-giver of them all. Not until he rounds the corner, that is, and finds a sleigh wating for him, pulled by several tiny reindeer, and manned by his very own elf. Off into the night he flies, to assume the duties of the real Santa. Or perhaps he is the real Santa. We’ll never know.
