When most people make an episode and title it “Part 1″ (as with Free Fall, last week’s episode), the second part is titled “Part 2″. Not those who make this series. I guess they knew something that we didn’t, or just felt that Free Fall just wasn’t really appropriate for the second part of the story or something.
In any case, this week we saw the second half of the plane crash story. The plane did lose cabin pressure, and the captain, because of the Dark Man (who we later find out is called Wide Brim or Romano and is played by John Walcutt), was unable to open the outflow valve, and as such everyone just went to sleep. This resulted in a whole lot of souls who didn’t know what was going on, thus they milled about, wondering what to do.
This week we also saw that the people on the plane were not the only people that died – there were indeed people on the ground who had died as well, such as little girl (played by Kyle Chavarria looking for her mom, and that was the first clue that Andrea (Aisha Tyler) was perhaps indeed dead (thanks Joss, for that tip, in last week’s comments). Then when the FAA inspector interviewed Melinda in the store it became obvious, a la The Sixth Sense, when Andrea was being ignored.
Later, Melinda told Andrea she had to “tell her something”, which of course was interpreted as something about her brother, Mitch (Dondre Whitfield). Even later, Jim asked Melinda if she had “told Andrea”, which was taken to be about Wide Brim and Chuckles, since that was what they were talking about – but I’m sure in reflection it was about her being dead. All-in-all, a well-written episode.
I look forward to seeing more about the fight between good and evil next season, and also seeing what they do with Andrea. Being that Melinda can speak to the dead, there’s no reason for her to be written out of the show. Still, it can only go on so long while she tries to be talked into going “into the light”.
