American Idol Recap: Top 4

We're now at the final four, and the contestants are each singing two songs of Elvis Presley this week.

Chris Daughtry
Suspicious Minds
A Little Less Conversation

Taylor Hicks
Jailhouse Rock
In the Ghetto

Katharine McPhee
Hound Dog / All Shook Up
Can't Help Falling in Love

Elliott Yamin
If I Can Dream
Trouble

I have to say that I was impressed the most by Elliott. It seems that each week I'm more awed by his voice. With that out of the way, I was at least as amazed by the fact that we're starting to see some personality out of him. At the same time, Taylor is showing that he has some vocal chops. While in the early weeks Chris was looking like an easy walk to the finals, and then Katharine seemed to have things wrapped up, Elliott and Taylor are making a game out of it now.

I really don't have a clue who will be in the bottom two this week, much less who will go home. I think this was compounded by the fact that both Chris and Katharine had sub-par performances this week. Both are capable of so much more, and both just did okay. Had they nailed it, I don't think it would be as difficult. So pulling out my crystal ball... I think that Chris and Katharine, as well as they have done to this point, will be the bottom two this week.

No idea why, probably because they are my favorites and it just seems like my favorites never make it when it really counts, and America as a whole just doesn't have a long-term memory, and they didn't do as well tonight as they typically have, while Elliott and Taylor really stepped it up.

As to who goes home? That's a crap shoot, but I think I'll take Chris for that.

Update: I finally nailed one. Bottom two and the one who goes home. Now my wife is mad at me, thinking I gave Chris bad luck. Figures. And did anyone see Priscilla Presley? She looked horrible.

You picked it perfectly. How did you know? Elliot really stepped it up last night, and Taylor has never been in the bottom two to my knowledge... but Katherine had a not very good night and Chris' off-night was still quite a bit above hers, I thought. He's been so solid and consistent the whole show, albeit a bit one-dimensional. I was very shocked to see him lose, and so was everyone else. Wow...

How did I know? I had no clue (sorry if that wasn't obvious).

I generally just try to get a feel from the audience, and though I think Chris and Katharine have done the best overall, I think that Elliott and Taylor did the best Tuesday night. That put Chris and Katharine in the bottom two.

From there, I figured it was a fifty-fifty split, and we decided on Katharine on the Tivo, so I'd pick Chris. I actually thought he did well on Renegade (the first song last week), but I didn't like his second song as much. This week, I didn't think he did well on either song (my wife would disagree).

Chris seems like a stand-up guy, and I wish him well. I think he'll make a lot of music, and I think he'll do well, whether he decides to make music as a profession or not. I don't know that American Idol is really his sort of show, however.

It's much more geared towards a mainstream audience, and his tastes run a little too heavy for prime-time America. He had his moments where he may have had a chance, but I don't think it was really meant to be for Chris - much like with Bo last year. Still, I think the show was better for having him in it.
