The Amazing Race Recap: Denver, Colorado

After they departed the swan, BJ and Tyler held a slight lead over Eric and Jeremy, apparently because they took the correct path to the hotel where they needed to drop their cars. Eric and Jeremy had no idea whatosever. The best part was when Tyler asked the desk clerk to tell Eric and Jeremy that the hotel had no Internet access. Unfortunately for BJ and Tyler, Eric and Jeremy were able to book an earler flight to arrive in Alaska, and were able to slip out of the airport before BJ and Tyler could find out.

BJ and Tyler and Ray and Yolanda, however, found a later flight to Taipei, and they all made the same connection, catching the teams up once again. So it was off to ice fishing. The teams had to drill ten holes in the ice, then move their ice fishing shack into place over the holes. Once that was done, they moved on to a snowshoe challenge, where BJ and Tyler nearly blew it because they simply could not find their snowshoes (despite passing them several times). Finally they did, and navigated the course to make their way to Denver for the final leg.

In the end, Ray and Yolanda were well behind and it was BJ against Eric at a final roadblock, gathering nine flags, from countries visited on their trip. Once gathered from the field (which contained 285 flags total), they had to order the flags correctly to continue. While Eric was there first he couldn’t get them right, and BJ managed to get them done, with the hippies finishing first - a prediction first uttered here on March 14, 2006 in the third episode of the season in Moscow, Russia. Eric and Jeremy finished second, with Ray and Yolanda finishing third. A very satisfying season.

Lost Recap: Three Minutes

We’ve finally found what happened to Michael during his search for Walt, and it isn’t pretty. Apparently he found him. And The Others. It’s still not quite clear what The Others want, but it seems that they want Michael to bring back some of the rest of the group (specifically Hugo, Jack, Kate and Sawyer). That’s an interesting selection. And Michael, for whatever reason, thinks that by doing so, he’ll get his son back. I’m not sure how that will work out, but next week seems to be an interesting one.

BJ and Tyler and Eric and Jeremy were pretty close throughout this leg, but somehow BJ and Tyler managed to out-pedal Eric and Jeremay in their paddle-boats to the end. With both teams running down the dock to the swan-shaped boats, it looked like the hippies would lose for sure. They had been in this same situation not long ago, as they tried to make it to the finish line in Lake Bennett, Australia and ended up in last place, without any shoes. Perhaps this time they were motivated, as they paddled like they have never paddled before (one would imagine) and they made it to the mother (swan) ship and finished the leg first, just ahead of Eric and Jeremy. Meanwhile, Ray and Yolanda were slightly behind, having got hung up in traffc.

It seems that Tyler’s ability to speak Japanese actually served them well here, for BJ and Tyler missed a close call at the airport on their way to Japan, landing somewhere around an hour and a half later than the other two teams. But somehow they managed to not only catch up to the other two teams, but beat Ray and Yolanda to the clue, and then to the pit stop at the capsule hotel. I’m actually not sure if I could have done that one. As I grow older, it seems like I have issues with enclosed spaces, so being in one of those tubes may have been a problem. Perhaps I could have slept in one of the open rooms. Anyway, while Ray and Yolanda did come in eventually, it put them behind the other two teams by fifteen minutes in the morning, and got them to the amusement park after they had already left, and that was all she wrote.

Mythbusters Recap: Exploding Pants

Exploding Trousers. In 1930s New Zealand, apparently it was quite the rage amongst the farmers to have exploding pants. So the build team tries to found out just how this happened.

They put together four compounds common to the time - fertilizer, black powder, gun cotton and herbicide - and four methods that might have ignited the compounds - flame (match, cigarette), radiant heat, friction (walking) and impact - and try to make something happen. Out of these sixteen tests, only three really cause anything useful to happen, and those are all based on the herbicide, which makes sense, as there was an outbreak in that time of herbicide due to farmers trying to eradicate growing weeds.
