The Twilight Zone Recap: The 7th Is Made up of Phantoms
Three National Guardsman are on maneuvers (including Warren Oates, who played Sergeant Hulka in the classic Stripes) when they find a wigwam (that's a teepee to most of us these days) and a canteen belonging to the 7th calvary, reminding them that they're in the same area occupied by General Custer's men in the Battle of Big Horn, just before they were caught unaware by thousands of Indian warriors. They report back to the superiors and are, understandably, not believed.
The next morning they set off on the same path as one of Custer's commanders and they encounter more clues - smoke signals, a runaway horse from a dead Indian warrior and even an Indian village. They charge over a hill and into the fray, never to be seen again - until one of their compatriots notices their names on a monument dedicated to the battle. Surely that's just a coincidence. Or is it? Excellent episode.
