Mythbusters Recap: Explosive Decompression, Frog Giggin', Rear Axle
Explosive Decompression. Ever worry that some nutjob will fire a gun on a plane and cause everything to rapidly decompress, sucking you, the guy next to you and even the seats and beverage carts out through that little hole in the window? Have no fear - apparently it won't happen. Busted.
One note on this one: The bullet that was fired went through the window, which is perhaps more structurally sound than the metal. If a bullet went through the metal, the force of the rushing wind may tear the metal causing a larger hole. It's also going to be different if the outside air is pressurized (as in, sitting on the ground) versus flying in the air, where there is less pressure. Just something to think about. Maybe they'll revisit it one day.
Rear Axle. In a nod to Hollywood, Adam and Jamie want to see if they can tie a cable to the rear axle of a police car and speed off, making the police, well, look dumb when the axle falls off. Unfortunately it seems that this one is a stunt job only. Even by upgrading the cable and weakening the bolts that hold the axle to the car they couldn't make the thing fall off like you see in the movies. Busted. If you're interested in making a clean getaway, however, it might help. Something to keep in mind if you can store enough cable. The only problem is the car seemed to have no problem breaking the cable.
Frog Giggin'. Though I live in the South and have heard some odd expressions, I've never heard the term giggin', but they say it means hunting. Nonetheless, these giggers realized that their headlights weren't working so they stuck a .22 caliber bullet into the fuse socket to make them work. If that doesn't help you realize what was going on, nothing will. Well, the headlights worked, but the current passing through the cartrdige made it fire. Whoops. The guys were able to make a cartridge fire with only minor modifications to the wire in a truck, but they couldn't even put a scratch on Buster (though he did get some holes in his clothes). Busted. Frankly, I'd probably rule it Plausible, but that's just me. One errant bullet is all you need, and it seems like they got it to fire, and it's not like they were using ballistics gel or anything on Buster. Maybe they'll revisit this one too.
This episode also has one notable piece of trivia, and that is that it appears to be the first time Adam uses his trademark phrase "I reject your reality and substitute my own".
