Mythbusters Recap: Ice Bullet, Exploding Toilet, Who Gets Wetter

Exploding Toilet. Apparently it's quite a common tale that someone pours a flammable substance in a toilet and then an igniting device such as a match or a lit cigarette is dropped into the toilet to create an explosion. So after a quick assembly of a small bathroom inside the blast chamber, and the unloading of hair spray and bug spray into the toilet, the guys try to create an explosion. No go.

As the fire marshal cringes at the thought of a full can of black powder being dumped into the toilet, Adam and Jamie add gasoline to the toilet, and half a can instead. They do get an explosion of sorts, but it doesn't even unseat Buster - it does, however, burn off his pants. Busted.

Is It Worth Running in the Rain? A quick consultation with the National Climatic Data Center in North Carolina indicates that they performed an impromptu test on whether it's better to walk in the rain or run in the rain. But Adam and Jamie figured a more rigorous test would be required. So they set up a full-scale test in a hangar.

At the end, their results indicated, that at a rate of 2-3 inches per hour over a 100 foot course, it's actually better to walk at a fast clip (about an 18 second pace) than it is to run. A quick run through the course picked up more water on their clothes than the walk did. The NCDC results were just the opposite, though they did not have any hard evidence to back it up - or at least none was provided. Perhaps this one will be revisited one day. Busted.

Ice Bullet. More than one movie, plenty of books and any number of conspiracy theories have forwarded the idea of an ice bullet, which means you can shoot someone and the evidence will literally melt away. So Adam and Jamie try to construct just such a beast. The first problem is that it's very fragile, so they can't even get it out of the mold. So they move on to alternate materials, such as gelatin and meat. These work a little better, but they don't make very good plugs, and as a result they don't embed themselves in the target since the force isn't there. They also leave evidence, which defeats the purpose. Busted on the ice bullet.

The next step in this investigation is to use a different sort of gun, which Jamie uses to make an umbrella gun. The only problem is that it again isn't very effective, which Adam demonstrates by out-shooting it with an El Cheapo CO2 rifle, which he then uses to make his own umbrella gun that fires BBs. This does a bit better job, and in the end the decision is that an alternate bullet wouldn't work well, but an umbrella gun could be used in this way to deliver a poison or something with very little evidence left behind. Plausible on the alternative delivery mechanism.

This episode is also notable because it is the first "real" episode (as opposed to a pilot), and as such contains an introduction to Buster, the crash test dummy, the oft-used blast chamber and a number of video clips of Adam and Jamie in various poses that is seen in the intro to most episodes - mostly Jamie in football and other safety gear as he prepares for, then backs out of, being the guinea pig for the exploding toilet segment (which opens the door for Buster's entrance).
