Building Salvager. We start off this show by helping tear out some pieces of the former Upsala College, which closed in 1995. Apparently the buildings will be torn down shortly, and the salvagers here are tearing out whatever they can to make a small profit before that happens. They get an old bathtub, toilet and entrance to a building. Frankly, it doesn’t look to me like it’s worth it. But what do I know?
Coal Miner. The bulk of the episode is made up of several jobs in a coal mine. This coal is actually anthracite, which is a hard coal, and mined from a location in Pennsylvania. The job starts in a rail car that goes nearly half a mile into the mountain, where it stops at a coal chute to load up with coal coming down from above.
After this first job is done, we move up the chute to where the coal is being fed, then further up to a higher location where new chutes are created by drilling into the rock and then blasting holes into the rock to create the next chute, about 25 feet further down the tunnel, which will allow the mine to move ever deeper into the mountain. All in all it makes me glad I’m not a coal miner.
Dear MIKE ROWE, will you see if you can go into a coal mine on tv? I watch your show every day!
