A woman (Kyra Sedgwick, wife of Kevin Bacon) and her stepfather (David Carradine) live a pretty miserable existence at a last-chance gas station. One day while they're trying to dig a bit more out of a dried-up well, the bottom suddenly drops out of it.

They lower a flashlight to figure out how deep the well has become and when it gets to the bottom, something grabs hold of the line. Eventually they get the line back and it holds a chunk of gold and some handwritten notes, but in a language they can't make out. The stepfather wants the daughter to keep away, but she sends some ham, a note and a dictionary down to them in a bag and gets back some jewelry and a note in response - apparently these well-dwellers are pretty smart. So she packs them a basket of goodies. They send her all sorts of jewels in return, just before her stepfather comes back.

He, of course, thinks that sending down more flashlights is the answer, so he drops a whole barrel down the well. The well-dwellers don't like them, however, and ask for more chicken (and they don't send any gold). So he suits up and gets his shotgun, lowering himself into the well. Hoping to prevent her new friends from getting hurt, Dora gets the bolt cutters to cut the line, but before she can cut it, the platform hits the bottom, so she starts to pull it up and suddenly it strains under the weight. Not sure what to expect, she looks at what comes back - it's the suit, but her stepfather isn't there. Instead, it's loaded with gold and jewels - and a note, thanking her for sending the turkey. They loved it.
