Who Wants to Be a Superhero? Recap: Issue 1
In this reality series from SciFi and Stan "The Man" Lee, a number of contestants vie to become an actual superhero. 12 are chosen to compete over a series of weeks in "unique challenges" to see if they are deserving of true superhero status. If they are deemed worthy, they will be the subject of a new Dark Horse comic and a Saturday night SciFi original movie.
Naturally, many of the contestants are aspiring actors, but a few of them seem to be a little over-the-edge (to put it lightly) and may just be regular folks. First, let's meet them:
-
Levity (aka Tobias)
A gay toymaker from Montana who wears a shiny sleeveless shirt and what appear to be jeans. His tagline in the opening credits is Air Powered Heroism. I don't have anything against the costume, his chosen professoin or the fact that he's gay. But I'm not sure I understand his powers. This is a recurring theme. -
Rotiart (aka Jonathan)
A business owner from California whose costume looks like it came out of Junkyard Wars. His unique power appears to be that he doesn't appear in the opening credits, and he doesn't appear to have any particular powers, but he does say that he will keep his eyes and ears open. Maybe he's a really good observer. -
Creature (aka Tonya)
An auto mechanic from Michigan, and the first female superhero candidate, her costume is interesting because there isn't much to it. It is essentially a miniskirt and a small bikini top. Her superpower appears to be saving the earth. She drives a vegetable oil car. Her tagline in the opening credits is Feel the Pain. -
Major Victory (aka Chris)
A disc jockey (and former exotic dancer) from California, this is the first costume that actually looks like a superhero. Sure, it's the old-style with lots of spandex, and he could probably use a cape, but it looks right. He wants to get closer to his daughter. Creature wants to get closer to him. His tagline is An All American Hero. -
Iron Enforcer (aka Steel)
A bodyguard from New York, this costume is something else. Essentially a pair of tight pants and a really big gun. No shirt. Very odd for a superhero. Perhaps not the best guy to save the world - from his own mouth: Annhilation is my name, winning is my game. We'll have to see how it turns out. Powerhouse. -
Monkey Woman (aka Mary)
She is a real estate investor from Washington, and her costume at least is done well. It is a fur bikini and a walking stick, though I have to admit I don't know what she plans to do with those bananas she has stuffed in her waistband. Perhaps they act like boomerangs. Her monkey call is quite good. A Barrel Full of Heroics. -
Fat Momma (aka Nell)
Inspired by her kids, we have another spandex superhero costume, with the added touch of donuts hanging off the utility belt. Those are probably going to be for power-up purposes, rather than any throwing use like the bananas of Monkey Woman. Fat Momma is a single mother from California. She also has a nice song about taking your food away. Very catchy. An Appetite for Heroics. -
Nitro G (aka Darren)
- This college student from New York works in a comic store and claims to know everything there is to know about every superhero. That's quite a claim, and seems a bit boastful, but hey - perhaps college isn't that hard these days. His costume looks to be a one-piece spandex suit that may make him superfast. He also has some spiffy goggles. Adrenalin Pumping Heroics.
-
Cell Phone Girl (aka Chelsea)
As an interior designer from California, it is no surprise that she loves cell phones. What isn't so clear is how this will make her a superhero. The tagline she has is Calling All Heroes, so perhaps she will just call others for help. But that seems a little lame. Her costume is a cape, a miniskirt and some fishnet stockings. -
Feedback (aka Matthew)
A software engineer from New Mexico, this is a costume. It looks a bit like armor, but I can only guess as a computer geek and with a name like Feedback, it must involve electronics somehow. His father died when he was young, which is when he adopted Stan Lee as a role model. Definitely odd, but at least he seems clear on his motivation. For Stan's sake, I just hope the motivation isn't stalking. Game On. -
Tyveculus (aka E. Quincy)
Looking like he stepped out of a chariot (or should have), this fire captain from California is the father to three boys, who are his motivation for being on the show. No mention of his power, so we'll just have to wait on that. At least he did seem to put some effort into his costume, with a helmet and everything. Righteous Might. -
Lemuria (aka Tonatzin)
This property manager from California was chosen by the SciFi.com users as the final contestant. Her power appears to have something to do with light, but her costume appears to have need of some inner support. I'm guessing that's what got her the gig on the show, however, so it can't be all bad. Time to Shine.
Now that we've met the contestants, if you're thinking that these are bad, you should see the ones that didn't make it. There was a guy who looked like he came out of Michael Jackson's Thriller video, a guy that looked like Howard Stern's Fartman, and even a giant bouncing pink ball. I don't know what his name was, or what he hoped to do inside the ball - his arms and legs were inside the ball. Maybe he'd just roll over everyone.
Once everyone was assembled in this great mansion on the hill, after being delivered by limo, they did what just about any sane person would do - they started to have a party. Unfortunately, Stan wasn't happy. He came on the video monitor and chastised them for doing what anyone would do and telling them that he expected more out of them. He then gave them the address for their lair, and they went off in search of it.
But before they were allowed in, it was revealed that one of their members was in fact a traitor. This was none other than Rotiart (which is, incidentally, traitor spelled backwards, and also why he isn't in the credits). The "junk" he had strapped to his costume was actually recording equipment, and he had been monitoring the contestants to see who was pure of heart.
Stan wasn't happy with the way with the way that Creature had acted towards the male superheros, Iron Enforcer had acted as a killer, or Levity had acted in saying he may sell images of himself at his toy store when he gets off the show. In the end, Levity's greed gets him cut from the show. Rotiart takes off as well, his job done.
The remaining contestants then have a challenge where they have to race through a public space, changing into their costumes as secretly as possible, and cross the finish line. But in the process, a little girl is crying out for help. Many of them simply speed right past. But some do not. In the end, it is Nitro G who gets cut, because not only did he not stop, he changed into his costume in full view of everyone.
