Mythbusters Recap: Ultimate Mythbuster
This episode diverges from the standard Mythbusters format in that there really isn't any myth busting. It's also not really a highlight episode in that there are only a few clips here and there, and so it doesn't really qualify as a standard episode in any way.
However, it is somewhat entertaining to watch because it has a competition betwen Adam and Jamie to see who is the Ultimate Mythbuster. They devise six tests that will determine who is possessing of the skills needed for busting myths, and the one who scores the best at the tests will be the winner.
Tortilla Tossing. The first test is to build a machine that will toss a tortilla the farthest distance. There are two requirements. The first is that at the end of the toss, the tortilla must be intact. The second is that the tortilla must not be contained within something else (so you cannot load it into a canister and shoot it). However, it is allowed to wrap the tortilla in something and have that fall away in flight - it just cannot end up that way.
Both machines utilize this technology, with Jamie using a paper sabot and shooting his rolled tortilla with a scuba tank. Adam uses metal plates to fling his tortilla like a frisbee. Both machines toss the tortilla a respectable distance, but Jamie's goes further. Jamie 1, Adam 0.
Fear Test. Next, the creepy-crawlies come out and both guys check them out. First a massive millipede, then a sleepy scorpion, then a hairy tarantula and finally a handful of corn snakes (it's this last bunch that you see in the opening credits under Jamie's beret). Neither had a problem, so the score doesn't change. Jamie 1, Adam 0.
Weight Guessing. They didn't guess the weight of each other, but the weight of other objects. First by eyeballing the objects, then by handling them. There were three objects - a toy car, then a gilded angel (from the Arc of the Covenant in the Cooling a Six-Pack episode) and finally a hatch from an airliner. Though neither was particularly great at guessing, Adam was better and the score is tied. Jamie 1, Adam 1.
Egg Drop. The next challenge was to test linear thinking. Both Adam and Jamie received a box of goodies and some eggs. The goal was to drop the eggs from the roof of the building without breaking them (using the materials in the box). Adam packed his eggs into the surgical gloves, inside the paper tube, and dropped from the full height of the building. He was successful, but only on the second attempt. Jamie, meanwhile, used the full extent of his supplies to lower the egg to a few inches off the ground and dropped from there. He was successful on his first try, so he won - but Adam wasn't happy about it. Jamie 2, Adam 1.
Pain Threshold. While Adam has easily undergone the most pain busting myths, most are his own fault. So the next challenge is a face-off where Adam and Jamie face each other with paint ball guns and shoot one another. They shoot. If they are still standing, they take one step closer and shoot again. Then they repeat until someone quits. Unfortunately for Adam, Jamie is a crack shot today and shoots him twice in the exact same spot, and Adam is quickly out. Jamie 3, Adam 1.
Memory Test. While Adam can't win at this point, there is some pride on the line, so it's a matter of answering some questions on past myths to see who can recall the most arcane facts. After they pose questions to one another, the winner is... Jamie. His 5 points here outdo Adam's 4.5 points, and Jamie wins the overall competition by 4 points to Adam's 1.
