Lost Recap: The 23rd Psalm
This episode begins with kids playing soccer in the dirt in Nigeria as some men arrive with guns. A priest comes out of the church and tells the men to leave the children alone. One of the boys is given a gun and is told to kill a man that's shoved to his knees, so apparently they don't much care what the priest says. The boy appears to be trying, but he just can't do it, so another, older, boy takes the gun and kills the man. He seems to have no problems. When asked his name, the boy says "Eko". The man who gave the other boy the gun says that he is "a born killer". The other boy, who we learn is Eko's brother, Yemi, picks up a cross from the dirt.
Meanwhile, back on the island, Claire brings Aaron to the now older Eko on the beach, and asks about what he is carving in his stick. Eko just says that he is carving things that he needs to remember, and then they talk about the name Aaron and how Aaron spoke for Moses because Moses could not speak for himself, and how Aaron was a great man in his own right. Then they talk about religion and how Charlie is religious because he carries a statue of the Virgin Mary. Eko asks to see the statue, and he wants to see where it came from. When Claire insists that it is just a statue, Eko breaks it open to show her the heroin inside and asks to see Charlie.
As this is happening, Locke and Michael are in the hatch, setting the combination on the armory and discussing guns. Later, Locke shows Michael how to shoot one of the guns from the armory. Afterwards, Michael asks Kate if he can have her shift in the hatch, apparently in the hopes that he'll have the chance to talk more with Walt via the computer. Charlie and Jin are fishing when Eko finds Charlie and insists that Charlie take him to where he found the statue.
Then we see more of Nigeria, when Eko was older. Now he has become one of the bad men himself, and he is meeting with a man who has come into a large amount of heroin. Eko offers to move the heroin out of the country in exchange for a small amount of money. His new friend doesn't like it, but he seems agreeable. Then Eko stands, and cuts the throats of the man and his friends. Apparently the deal is off, at least under those terms. Eko goes to see his now grown brother Yemi, who is a priest, and asks if he can use one of the church planes to get the heroin out of the country.
Yemi does not agree initially, but eventually Eko convinces him that if he does not, his associates will burn down the church and do it anyway. So Eko buys 300 of the Virgin Mary statues and hides the heroin inside of them. As they try and pack the statues on the plane, Yemi shows up, then the military arrives and starts shooting. One of Eko's friends is killed and his brother is shot. They get Yemi aboard the plane, but before Eko can get in, the other friend shoves Eko out the door and takes off without him, hoping to keep the spoils for himself. The military thinks that Eko is a priest, so he escapes prosecution.
Back on the island, Eko has Charlie climb a tree, and they finally spot the plane, but then a series of explosions go off and Eko comes face-to-face with that strange black smoke cloud, a lot larger this time. Eko stares it down, it retreats back into the jungle, and Charlie and Eko head for the plane. There Eko finds the body of his brother. Eko gives Charlie a statue from the stash in the plane, to replace the one he broke earlier, takes the cross from Yemi's neck, and then sets the plane on fire.
In the hatch, Michael makes sure he is alone, then sits down at the computer. He and Walt have a quick conversation, then Jack shows up and gives Michael a pep talk about how they will go out and bring Walt back as soon as they are able.
Befor heading back to camp, Charlie asks Eko if he is or is not a priest, and Eko says that he is, then starts to recite the 23rd Psalm as we see a montage of the rest of the survivors:
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death*, I fear no evil, for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the lord forever. Amen.
At the end of the episode, Claire kicks Charlie out and tells him that she doesn't want him sleeping anywhere near her or her baby. We see him walking through the jungle with a torch, then digging under a tree, where he has a number of statues hidden, and he adds his latest one to the stash. I guess he wasn't being completely truthful with anyone.
*Yes, I realize this isn't the way it's usually written. It's not written that way in any bible that I've ever seen. Perhaps it's a special message. I'm just recording it here the way it was spoken in the episode, and I listened to it half a dozen times to make sure I got it right. That's they way they said it.
