Lost Recap: What Kate Did

As Sayid digs a grave for Shannon, Kate watches over Sawyer in the hatch, and his feverish body begins to mumble, and that takes Kate back to her past.

We see her on the porch of her mother's house as her stepfather, Wayne, comes home drunk and makes passes at her. Then she leaves him in his bed and climbs onto her motorcycle as the house explodes. Later, she talks to her mother at work and tells her that she's taken care of her and hands her an insurance policy on the house.

Back on the island, everyone attends the funeral of Shannon, and then Locke, Michael and Mr. Eko watch the orientation video in the hatch.

Kate slips back to her past, where she is tracked down by marshals, who are taking her to an arraignment when they encounter a deer in the road and they end up against a tree, which is when Kate takes the chance to kick the marshal out of the car and make an escape - but not before spotting a large black stallion outside the car. This is the same stallion that she sees later on the island, where it is equally out of place.

In the hatch, Mr. Eko tells Locke a story about Josiah, and how they were to build the temple with gold from the treasury, but instead they found a book, which in actuality was the old testament. Comparing this to the book they found in the Arrow Station (as shown in The Other 48 Days), Mr. Eko presents Locke with the book.

Locke looks skeptical, but opens the book and is amazed that he finds a segment of the film inside, and begins to splice the pieces together. He and Mr. Eko then sit down and watch the spliced film, but they gain little insight into the operation of the station. They do, however, learn that this is station #3 and that they are not to use the computer for anything other than entering the code.

Kate has slipped back into her thoughts, where she visits her dad, and there she confronts him with the truth - that she found out that he is indeed not her father. Apparently Wayne was her father, and she wants to know why he never told her. The reason, oddly enough, is that he knew that she would kill him. Fair enough. Armed with the truth, Kate leaves and returns to reality, where she finds a waking Sawyer, who also sees the horse in the jungle.

Meanwhile, Michael is looking over the computer equipment in the hatch when he realizes that it has receive a message. He responds, only to be asked who it is. When he answers with his name, he gets a cryptic, yet enticing, reply: "Dad?"
