According to Jim Recap: The Clock

One night when Ryan comes over for dinner, the kids are a little rowdy. They are so bad, in fact, that Andy throws his coffee on the kids because they are under the table and he doesn’t like it. Luckily they are smart and tie his shoes together so he can’t chase after them very quickly.

But because of this event, the kids are running around the house and break a lamp, so they get sent to bed early, and Jim and Cheryl have a nice night to themselves and they get to realize how enjoyable it is not having the kids around. Not that they don’t want the kids, mind you, just that they enjoy each other’s company.

So they next night Jim decides to wind the clock forward a couple of hours and send the kids to bed early. Somehow they don’t notice this, and suddenly he and Cheryl have another night alone. They agree that they can only use it sparingly. But soon the kids are going to bed right after dinner and then almost as soon as they come home from school.

The next thing you know, however, Ryan comes over with the news that Jim’s latest fertility test came back, and the count is through the roof, so the time is now! But after all the time they’ve been spending together, neither Jim nor Cheryl is sure they want another child – that will mean they can’t spend this sort of time together anytime soon. They just don’t want to tell the other one since they have been working so hard at it.

So they try and keep the kids up all night by winding the clock the other way, but since the kids have been going to be so early, it doesn’t work, and before long it’s time. They head to bed and the truth comes out. Little did they know it, but they both want the same thing. And just like that, there is no more little one on the way.
