The Amazing Race Recap: Kuwait City, Kuwait

Maybe Steven Segal Will See Me and Want Me to Be in One of His Movies!

After arriving in Chennai, India in last place, it looked like David and Mary had a long road ahead of them, especially when the new rules of the race said that they had to finish this leg in first place or they would be slapped with a thirty minute penalty. But as has happened so many times in this race, everyone bunched up on flights to Kuwait and the massive lead evaporated almost instantly, as all teams arrived on the very same flight.

One tantalizing tidbit is that the typical commentary of "after a mandatory twelve hour rest period" was absent, and though the racers arrived in daylight, they also departed in daylight. So the rest period this time had to be something other than twelve hours. No explanation as to why.

In any case, the mystery destination that was received by all teams on their phones was the Kuwait Towers, and none of the teams had a problem finding them. At the back of the pack when they arrived were David and Mary and Erwin and Godwin, which worked out well because Erwin and Godwin ran interference for David and Mary, allowing them to take the Fast Forward while keeping other teams from doing so. Those two guys are truly first-class.

The challenge at the Fast Forward was to act as a fire fighter for a short time and walk up to a blazing "oil well" behind a heat shield, and then grab the clue, which led directly to the Pit Stop, and this allowed David and Mary to bypass all challenges in this leg, and granted them the first place finish they needed, so they're still in the race. They also win a trip to Negril, Jamaica. We think they should give it to the Cho Brothers.

All of the other teams were faced with a Roadblock, where one of the team members had to climb the outside of the tower to retrieve a satchel containing puzzle pieces. They then took the satchel back down to the ground, where they put together the puzzle to reveal the name of a street, and on the street they will find a marked stall. The only problem is that the street name was written in Arabic, so they needed a translator. That turned out to not be hard, but finding the stall in the market was.

Tyler and James were the first to the market and the stall, so they were the first to the Detour, where they could choose between Manual or Automatic. In Manual, the teams drive to a feed lot and they then fill ten 110-pound bags with camel feed to a marked line, transport them 100 yards to a pallet, and properly stack them to receive their next clue. In Automatic, the teams have to drive to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club, where the team chooses a robotic jockey, attach it to a camel, and, use a voice-activated remote control to cause the jockey to lightly whip the camel, which drives the camel down the course. At the end of the course, a wrangler hands them their next clue.

I can certainly understand teams not wanting to haul some thousand pounds of camel feed, but for whatever reason, it just seemed easier to me. After watching Tyler and James and Lyn and Karlyn drive around looking for the Camel Racing Club, it seemed more so. Of course, if I was in the midst of the race, I can't say I would do any better. Watching Peter and Sarah find the already taken Fast Forward, then seeing them find their way all the way back to the Kuwait Towers was probably more like what I would have done. They finally made it to the feed lot after dark, and thankfully the producers left a clue directing them to go straight to the Pit Stop.

  • David and Mary
  • Dustin and Kandice
  • Rob and Kimberly
  • Lyn and Karlyn
  • Erwin and Godwin
  • Tyler and James
  • Peter and Sarah

Interesting in these resuls is that last week's top and bottom completely flip-flopped, with David and Mary ending up on top and Peter and Sarah on the bottom. That may be the first time I've seen that happen. With the exception of Lyn and Karlyn swapping places with Erwin and Godwin, all the other teams stayed in the exact same position.

Also of interest is to see Dustin and Kandice continue to do so well. I try not to stereotype people, but they continue to surprise.
