According to Jim Recap: You Gotta Love Somebody (Part 1)
Jim and Cheryl get a surprise visit from old friend Danny (Dan Aykroyd), who brings them tickets to the Policeman's Ball. He also brings his new partner Laraine (Laraine Newman) with him, and Cheryl insists that there is something up between them, so she wants Jim to get involved and try and set them up. Jim, being a guy, doesn't want to get involved.
What ensues is an argument about how Jim and Cheryl never would have been together if guys didn't get involved, because Cheryl insists that Danny is the one who is responsible for them being together - she says that he came over and told her how great a guy he was, and that he was missing the hockey game just to dance with her. So she danced with him, and the rest is history.
That's enough for Jim, and he agrees to help. So while Cheryl and Dana take Laraine shopping for a new dress, Jim gets Danny to come over for dinner and while Jim gets Danny to get up the courage to ask her out (well, he gets him to ask her if she needs a ride), Andy takes the opportunity to move in and get himself a date to the ball. Whoops. I don't think that was what was supposed to happen.
