According to Jim Recap: Foul Ball

As the first day of school approaches for Kyle, so too does another important milestone: His first Cubs game. And it’s even more important because Jim scores free tickets, and he wants to take Kyle along. The only problem is that it comes on the very same day as the first day of school, and Cheryl will hear none of it. So Jim and Andy do what any responsible parent would do – they hide in the bushes while Cheryl takes Kyle in, and then they sneak Kyle out so that they can go to the game.

Wouldn’t you know that things don’t always work out as you would like, however, as Kyle gets hit in the eye by a foul ball, so that means Jim needs to come up with a story for Cheryl, and he tells her that Kyle got into a fight with the school bully. So the next day it’s Cheryl and Dana in the bushes and when the “bully” comes over to look at Kyle’s eye and offer to be Kyle’s best friend, Cheryl jumps out to confront him, only to be met with bewilderment, because he had nothing to do with it. Suddenly she knows what happened.

At home later that day, both Jim and Cheryl are confronted by a grown Kyle (played by Robert Belushi, Jim’s son), and to Jim, he is a son who is good at scheming and not much else, because he always taught him to get out of everything. To Cheryl, he is good at sitting on the couch but he needs her to help him with anything difficult, because she was always there to protect him. And with that, Jim and Cheryl agree that they need to raise Kyle together, not separately.
