According to Jim Recap: You Gotta Love Somebody (Part 2)

In You Gotta Love Somebody (Part 1), Cheryl had convinced Jim to help old friend Danny (Dan Aykroyd) ask out his partner Laraine (Laraine Newman) because Danny had helped the two of them get together way back when. The only problem is that Andy decided to take the opportunity to jump in the game and made his move, so now he is going to the Policeman's Ball with Laraine and Danny thinks that he's destined to be alone (and doesn't want to talk to Jim). Cheryl, of course, thinks that Jim still needs to do something about it all.

While Cheryl thinks that Danny helped her and Jim get together, Dana remembers it differently - she recalls Cheryl's boyfriend Chad (played by Brad Paisley, future husband of Kimberly Williams, who plays Dana) being in the bar, and Cheryl using Jim to get away from him - not that Danny wasn't involved, just that perhaps it wasn't the only reason.

When Jim hears that Cheryl had a boyfriend, he goes ballistic. That is, until Andy tells his version of that night, and how he helped Jim get away from girlfriend Patty (Jill Matson), which Cheryl is only too happy to hear about, because that gets her off the hook for Chad.

Meanwhile, back at the Ball, Danny is moping about the bar, and Jim has decided to do something, so he takes his buddy over to his partner and tells Andy to move aside. It turns out that is the best thing that can be done, and though Danny continues to step all over himself, Laraine can take it from here. They rapidly discover that they were indeed meant for one another, and that, as they say, is history.

Jim, the band, and even Danny, then get to perform the song that they had been planning all along, and finally Cheryl is happy.
