The Amazing Race Recap: Mauritius

I Wonder if This Is Going to Make My Fingers Pickle

It turns out that taking the Fast Forward during the Kuwait City, Kuwait leg last week left David and Mary with a large lead - some three hours ahead of even the second-place team. But as has happened time and time again in this running of the race, the gap closed almost immediately with another international flight, this time to the island nation of Mauritius, off the coast of Africa.

Though I understand the teams are in a race, I find it interesting that the can get so upset while in line. It's obvious that they are rarely going to be displaced by something as trivial as a plane reservation, and yet the line at the counter was the place where Lyn and Karlyn got into it with Tyler and James (and later Dustin and Kandice). But all the teams got on the same plane - and even when they don't, teams are almost always together within a short while, at least this season. It just doesn't seem worth the effort to get all worked up.

In any case, once the teams arrive at their destination, they each find a model boat in their cars, and had to determine that it's a replica of a real boat, anchored in Grand Baie some 200 miles away. They then had to drive themselves there and swim to the boat to get their next clue. At the boat, they get the next clue, instructing them to swim to the other shore, where they can open the clue, and there they find out that they can drive to the Case Noyale Post Office, another 49 miles away.

On the way to the post office, Dustin and Kandice smash their car into the back of a bus, but no harm appears to be done, and they continue on. Meanwhile, the car of Rob and Kimberly stalls out and they can't get it back into gear, so they have to wait for a replacement.

At the post office, teams find a Detour, where they have to choose between Salt and Sea.

In Salt, the team has to drive two miles to a salt pan, where they will search among three enormous piles of salt for a salt shaker that contains their next clue. What they aren't told is that there are shakers that don't contain clues - they contain pepper. In Sea, the team walks down a nearby dock, chooses a boat captain, and takes a boat to a small island. Once on the island, they use a treasure map to search the island for their boat's mast and sail. After locating these, they carry them back to the boat and attach them to receive their clue from the captain before returning to shore.

Dustin and Kandice chose Sea, which proves a good choice, and they easily finish first. All of the other teams initially choose Salt. When Rob and Kimberly finally get their replacement car and see everyone digging (and the frustration level), they head to Sea as well. That prompts an exodus in that direction, so they are followed by Tyler and James, then Erwin and Godwin and Lyn and Karlyn and finally David and Mary give in as well.

Once teams find their mast and sails, they receive the clue that instructs them to go to the Pit Stop at Chateau Bel Ombre. Dustin and Kandice win motor scooters for their first place finish.

  • Dustin and Kandice
  • Tyler and James
  • Rob and Kimberly
  • Erwin and Godwin
  • Lyn and Karlyn
  • David and Mary

Dustin and Kandice are making a strong play late in the race, and Tyler and James, though showing a lot of promise, have a heck of a time with directions or maps of any kind (though they managed to get into second because of a wrong turn on the part of Rob and Kimberly). It seems that Erwin and Godwin are easily the best of the rest.

David and Mary continue to hang on as well, because this was another non-elimination leg. It will be interesting to see what happens next week, as with no Fast Forward, it is unlikely that they will finish first, so they'll likely be the recipients of a thirty minute penalty in the new format.

There was no Roadblock on this leg of the race.
