Lost Recap: Every Man for Himself
Returning to the plight of Sawyer and Kate, we find that they really don't want to be prisoners of The Others. In fact, Sawyer has come up with a new plan for escape - by rerouting the water pipe of the reward system in his cage, he can create a puddle in front so that the next person who comes to see him will stand in it, and grabbing hold of them, Sawyer can give them the shock of their life.
Unfortunately for him, the next person to visit is Ben, who apparently watched the plan on his television, and turned off the power, so it doesn't work when Sawyer tries to turn on the current. Sawyer gets beaten and tied down, and told that he now has a pacemaker installed in his heart, and if his heart goes above a certain rate, his heart will explode. To help him control himself, he's given a nifty watch that beeps when it hits a certain pulse. And he's told that he isn't allowed to tell Kate what happened.
Before he has the chance, a bloody body comes in - it's Colleen, who was shot during The Glass Ballerina episode. Juliet races to save her, but as we find out, Juliet is a fertility doctor, not a surgeon, so she enlists the help of Jack, only that comes along too late, and Colleen dies from her wound.
It also seems that Jack is trying to drive a wedge between Juliet and Ben, but there is as yet no telling if this will work or not. Juliet seems to be a very interesting character, and Ben quite psychotic - but it's an interesting story that is unfolding, that is certain.
Meanwhile, the fact that Sawyer isn't allowed to share with Kate what happened is difficult because Kate wants to know what is going on, and Sawyer clams up - a very unusual thing for him. Instead, he retreats into his past, where we see him in prison, befriending a mild-mannered inmate, who allegedly stole $10 million. In the end, Sawyer actually finds out where the money is hidden, and gets the location, which he turns over to the authorities in exchange for commuting the remainder of his sentence. Nice.
Back on the island, Colleen's husband goes ballistic when he finds out about her death and nearly beats Sawyer to a pulp, but he doesn't fight back because his new heart monitor starts beating and he tries to calm himself - this is when Kate knows something is wrong. When she admits she loves Sawyer, the beating stops, and that's when Ben takes Sawyer to the top of the island to show him that they are in fact on a different island than the one where they crashed - a sort of Alcatraz - so escaping will do no good.
Frankly, it seems to me that this may be another psychological tactic. While they are obviously looking at another island, who ever said that they are actually on a separate island, and who ever said that The Others tell the truth about everything? This would be the perfect opportunity for them to insert a nice little story to try and keep Sawyer (and company) from escaping.
There is also a brief look at the other survivors, and we see that Desmond has apparently calmed himself a bit after the implosion of the hatch - he doesn't have the manic energy that seemed to be driving him. But he seems to have picked up the ability to foretell the future, as evidenced by his building of a lightning rod, which is then struck during a brief but intense storm. Very interesting indeed.
