Close to Home Recap: Silent Auction
A silent auction, by its very name, is typically pretty tame. Even more so when it happens at an elementary school. But not in Indianapolis, or at least not in this particular school on this particular night. It seems that someone took a disliking to one of the attendees - a male - and it appears to have something to do with the company he was keeping - a female. The company in this case is the first suspect.
Unfortunately, it seems that there is really no motive whatsoever for keeping her. There isn't any evidence, either, which makes it doubly hard. In looking for something to link the killer to their suspect, the investigators turn up a piece of a shoe - a very expensive shoe to boot - and wouldn't you know it, the shoe doesn't belong to the suspect they have in custody.
So poring through all the pictures they have from that night, Annabeth and company quickly compile a handful of potential suspects. In other words, women not only who might have worn that particular shoe, but the accessories and outfits that went with it. One of the interesting finds is the best friend of the woman they have in custody, and when they search her closet, they find the perfect match for the shoe, almost like Cinderella, but not quite the same sort of prize.
What's even more shocking is that when the examine her living room, it's a virtual match for the suspect's living room - the only question remaining is which one copied the other? Digging a little deeper, they find that their new suspect has a stalking arrest from some 12 years prior, which makes things very interesting indeed. Looking through pages upon pages of email establishes that she has a number of potential motives - but when it comes to the trial, the judge will admit neither into evidence.
Still, knowing they have her dead to rights, they offer a plea deal. It's for less than they want, but with a lack of evidence, it's the best that they can do.
But fortunately, their catch made a comment about helping those who are sick, and that leads the investigation down another path. They recall that the earlier stalking case involved a sick child, as did the latest one. So searching the home of their would-be stalker, they find some prepared soup, ready to go for her next victim. And that is endangering the life of a minor, a completely separate charge, which doesn't apply to the plea deal, so they get her with some extra years. Nice.
