For their fifteenth anniversary, Jim suggests that he and Cheryl renew their vows – and he gives her a fancy ring box to prove that he is serious. Alas, the box is empty, and it ends up covered in pizza cheese. But it’s the thought that counts, right? When Ruby and Gracie hear, they want to get their ears pierced to go with their fancy dresses, but neither Jim nor Cheryl think that they are old enough. Actually, Jim doesn’t really care – until Cheryl reminds him that pierced ears lead to tube tops and thong underwear. Then he agrees.
But it is Cheryl who gives in, when she is trying to get things ready for the big party (Jim never said anything about a big party), and the girls just won’t stop pouting because they are being treated like babies. So she tells Dana to take them out and get their ears pierced.
When Jim finds out, he goes ballistic. But to his credit, he quickly calms down, has a few shots and shoves a thumbtack through his own ear – followed by a feathery earring that he wears when he walks down the “aisle”. It should perhaps go without saying, but Cheryl isn’t happy about this development.
It is Jim, however, who makes her realize that the whole thing wasn’t meant to be a huge production with a lighting designer, but a special moment between the two of them, and that’s what brings her back down to earth, Jim’s fancy earring and all. Aww.
