When Jim picks up Gracie and Ruby from karate class, he ends up having to watch Justin until his dad picks him up (to be fair, he gets a couple free classes out of it). Unfortunately his dad doesn’t show, so Jim takes Justin home and leaves his contact information. At least that way they aren’t sitting on a bench all night. As the kids are beating up on Andy, the doorbell finally rings and it is Justin’s parents. There’s just one problem. It is not only Justin’s dad, it’s Jim’s dad too.
Bill doesn’t recognize Jim, but Jim recognizes him. While Bill is in the bathroom, Jim tells Andy about it, and makes him promise to keep his mouth shut. But if you know Andy, you know that doesn’t stand much chance of happening, and sure enough, when Bill comes out, Andy jumps on him, and before long the secret is out.
Well, Bill thinks at first that Andy is his son, but that is straightened out before long, and then the secret is out. Before things can get too much stranger, Bill and family pack up to leave, which is when Cheryl throws in her own little surprise – she’s invited Justin and the rest of the family to the school carnival later in the week. Jim isn’t too excited about this development, but he doesn’t want to let on anything more, so he just keeps his mouth shut.
At the carnival, Justin and his dad and Andy and Jim get into those big sumo wrestler suits (I so want to try those), but when Justin challenges Andy, it means that Jim is left facing his dad – and when things get a bit louder than expected, Justin overhears, and it doesn’t sit well with him, finding out that his dad left his other son 35 years ago (incidentally, this makes Jim about 45 years old, since he was 10 when his dad left).
After a talk with Cheryl, Jim finds Bill trying to talk to Justin, but Justin just won’t listen – so Jim, being the nice guy that he is, sits down with him and tells him to give his dad a chance. He isn’t going anywhere. And if he does, to let him know, because now he has a big brother that will take care of it. Who knew he had that in him?
