According to Jim Recap: Dana Dates the Reverend
After church one Sunday, and Jim has his bowling ball (the "Ebonite 280 with Reactive Resin Shell") blessed for the upcoming tournament, Reverend Pierson (Chris Elliott) asks Dana to go to lunch with him on Monday. She agrees, but before she can get there, she begins to wonder if it was a bad idea. When they actually get to lunch, she launches into a speech about how she just wants to be friends, but then he introduces her to a mutual friend at an ad agency who may have a job for her. Needless to say, she's a bit embarrassed.
Meanwhile, Jim and Andy have found out that the reverend has a bit of talent on the bowling lanes, and they are open to getting him on their team - once they see him bowl three strikes in a row (a turkey!). But he doesn't think that he should use his "power" to beat others. Then Jim says he can get a date with Dana, and that's all it takes.
Unfortunately, once the two start dating, the balls start heading straight to the gutter. So it looks like a certain amount of unhappiness in the life of the reverend was necessary for him to bowl a good game. So he breaks it off with Dana, which she of course blames on Jim.
After a talk with Cheryl, Jim talks to the Reverend, and asks him to talk to Dana, to explain things, even if it means that he can't be on their bowling team, and that at least helps to set Dana down easily - it also means that the Reverend walks away just one roll from a perfect game, and Jim picks up the ball. What's odd is that he rolled one back in The Turkey Bowl, so it's not his first ever. But still, he throws a gutter ball. Ah well, can't win 'em all.
