Heroes Recap: Chapter Ten: Six Months Ago
When Hiro arrives at the Burnt Toast Diner, he believes that he has made it - he has finally jumped to where he intended. And when he sees Charlie, he thinks that he will save her. But as when he finds out that it is her birthday, and he begins to talk to her, it rapidly becomes clear that it is not when he intended - it is instead six months prior to where he intended to go. This is when things get interesting.
Hiro made his jump a bit more correctly than last time, but he's still off. At least he's in the same town, and the same place - it's just that his aim isn't quite right. What is interesting is the time implications of what he has done. When he calls Ando in Japan (how does he do that, exactly?), it is Hiro who answers the phone, because Ando is out for the day. Hiro in Texas hangs up.
Then we find out that Hiro is the one who gives Charlie the Japanese phrase book, the one that she referenced when we first met her in Chapter Eight: Seven Minutes to Midnight. Though Hiro tells Charlie that he is from the future, and she doesn't really believe him, and it is neat to see the pieces fit together, it is interesting that she didn't appear to recognize him in that episode. Or perhaps she did, and we just weren't looking for it. Perhaps I'll have to go back and watch it when I have the chance.
The reason that Hiro ultimately cannot save Charlie is that she has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. The question here is - has she been diagnosed by a real doctor, or has Sylar, who we will find out has certain other abilities, diagnose her this way in order to get at her brain?
Next we meet Gabriel, a watch maker, as he meets Chandra Suresh. It appears that Gabriel has no outward talent, only the ability to tell what is not right - in this case that the elder Suresh has a watch that is off by 2 seconds per day - and set it right.
When Gabriel finds out that his talent is not anything outwardly "special", he is furious, and he promptly locates one of the files on the desk (belonging to a Brian Davis) and decides that he will contact him. When Mr. Davis visits, Gabriel tells him that his name is Sylar (the name on the face of a watch). And when Mr. Davis shares his ability - to move things with his mind - and that he wants to get rid of it, the newly christened Sylar uses his ability to "see" that this is indeed not right, and he kills Mr. Davis to "fix" it. Thus Sylar is born.
Sylar later visits Chandra to show him that he has developed a new talent - the ability to move things with his mind. Though we don't see the removal of Mr. Davis' brain, you have to assume that this is part of Sylar's ability. Perhaps he uses his watch-making talents to dis-assemble the brain and wire it into his own, giving himself the ability. Or something.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Matt Parkman has made what should be a routine traffic stop, but it is far from that. Rather than a normal stop, it is one Eden McCain - looking like a bit of a rebel, with long hair and plenty of contraband in her fast car. We again see her ability to simply tell people what she wants them to do in that oh-so-creepy voice, and sure enough, Matt backs away and goes and gets doughnuts like she asks him to do.
What we also see is that Matt and his wife Janice talk about his test to make detective, and apparently he doesn't read very well, which is why he may fail the test repeatedly. It also may be the he doesn't come out of "The Eden Zone" until just before time to take the test.
At some point after the traffic stop, Eden meets up with The Haitian, who takes her to see Mr. Bennet, and he begins to teach her that there may be another way to live her life.
In Las Vegas, it seems that Jessica Sanders hasn't always been just a figment of Niki and her imagination. Jessica was actually Niki's sister, and it looks like Jessica took the worst of the abuse dished out by their father, even though Niki doesn't seem to remember any of it. Their father is now trying to make his way back into her life, but when he gives Micah a laptop and Micah immediately takes it apart, that's pretty well all she wrote for that.
Things are going well for the Petrelli clan, as Peter Petrelli is doing well and Nathan Petrelli is as well. But when they find out that their father is getting ready to bring charges against Linderman, that all changes. Not only does someone run Nathan off the road, which leads to his wife's injury (and where we see Nathan fly to escape the wreck - did no one see that happen?), but suddenly Mr. Petrelli ends up dead. And here I thought he killed himself because of "depression". It looks like there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
Back in Texas, Claire Bennett has just found out that she has made cheerleader, and already changes are starting to surface. When she ends up with her hand cut up by some glass, that night there isn't a scratch left on her. Something is definitely up here.
At the end of the episode, Hiro finally arrives in the current time to meet Ando. When Ando asks Hiro if he has finally done it, and teleported himself, Hiro says no, he took the bus. Classic!
