My Name is Earl Recap: South of the Border (Part Uno)

When Catalina was hauled off to Mexico (in Born a Gamblin' Man), Earl vowed to Randy that they would go and bring her back to America. That's just what they are going to do. Only it's a lot harder than they thought, because the fastest way to get there is by plane, and Earl and Randy have never flown before.

The first problem they run into is that they don't have passports, and it seems that the main requirement of a passport photo is that you keep your eyes open. If you've watched this show for any length of time, then you know that one problem Earl has is keeping his eyes open when his picture is taken. Randy comes up with a solution - he cuts the eyes out of a poster and tapes them to Earl's face. While the greens eyes in the picture don't match his brown eyes on his real face, he says he had a double eye transplant and the TSA officer lets him through. It's also odd that the passport goes through so quickly, but it's only a half-hour show (at least, the first part is).

The second problem is the security line. When Randy hears that you have to take your shoes off so that they can make sure they don't have explosives in them, Randy gets worried, and throws his over the checkpoint. This, naturally, gets him selected for extra screening - but he thinks it means he gets to go to the front of the line. We don't actually get to see the examination that Randy undergoes. That's probably a good thing.

The final problem is that when Earl gets on the plane, he gets nervous when the flight attendants start telling him about all the problems that might go wrong while in flight, and has himself a panic attack, so he gets right off that plane. He ends up having to go to the doctor and get a sedative, which gets him on the plane, but it wears off before they are even off the runway. He has to be strapped into the seat, which means that Randy gets to eat his food. Oh well.

While all this is going on, Joy is taking her happy pills to help her deal with her anger. It's an inopportune time, too, because their neighbors in the trailer park have moved right up next to their trailer, so that they can have a larger yard. Since Joy is happy, she won't tell them to move back, so it means that Darnell gets to enjoy all their company right up-close.

When Earl and Randy finally get to Mexico, Earl is starved because he wasn't able to eat on the plane. He wants a taco. Randy won't let him have one, however, because the next bus to Catalina's village won't leave until tomorrow and he doesn't want to miss it. So they get into a fight and Earl doesn't get his taco. It's good to see Randy stick up for himself. But it means that Earl and Randy sit at different places on the bus, and so Randy doesn't notice when Earl gets kidnapped by bandits.

Make sure to catch the end in South of the Border (Part Dos).
