Ghost Whisperer Recap: Cat's Claw
Though it is very cold, Melinda is suddenly almost feverish, and before long, she is being transported to the jungle of all places. This is new. While ghosts have visited her, she's never had them take her anywhere before. This one is also melting things in the house (like ice cream) and making it rain inside, as if the humidity is near 100% (like in the jungle). It's very odd indeed.
It also so happens that Delia brings her a load of things, and in this load is a hat, and when Delia puts on the hat, she looks just like Wide Brim, so that means it's time to go visit Professor Payne. Maybe he will know if the hat actually belonged to Romano or not. Alas, when Melinda arrives, the professor is his usual dismissive and unhelpful self - but he does have an idol on his shelf which matches one that Melinda saw in her jungle dream.
Being that the professor isn't very helpful, it isn't likely that this will help, but he does at least provide some information on it, and it seems that this idol was used in the jungle by the medicine man of the tribe. If the idol fell over while the medicine man was working, it meant that whoever was being worked on would die. If the idol stayed up, then it meant the act would be successful. That helps. Somewhat.
Later, Melinda goes to a lecture at the college to find out about these flowers that she is seeing, and there she sees her ghost step out of the slides, for it seems that his former partner is the one giving the lecture - and it so happens that none other than Professor Payne is there as well. Perhaps something interesting will happen with his character in this episode.
In fact, later in his office, the idol starts moving around on its own, and he realizes that maybe he needs to press Melinda about just what it is he does. But before he does, the idol falls on its side, seemingly indicating that someone is going to die (or perhaps that someone already has). So the professor has a few drinks and heads to see Melinda, and the ghost visits, and tells them to go see his ex-partner, who has taken a few too many pills herself, but they get there just in time to save her.
That piques Payne's interest, so Melinda fesses up about her abilities, and Payne isn't sure what to think, but he agrees not to pass it along. He does, however, tell the ex-partner that Melinda knows something, so she comes to visit the next day, and Melinda shares her gift herself. That's when everything comes out: Apparently the ghost died on the trip because he was infected with a fever, and the partner couldn't have done anything, but she has blamed herself all this time. Knowing that he was sick and she couldn't have helped will help her to move on.
Interestingly, Payne is wearing a wedding ring. When he comes home to his house, he announces "hi honey, I'm home". When he returns home from Melinda's after picking up his car, we see her in the window shutting the window, and he turns to look at the house when she does - but the two never talk. My wife suspects that perhaps Payne's wife is dead, opening the door for Melinda to talk to her to get her to cross over. I like the way it's going, and think it's a distinct possibility. We'll have to see where that goes. Thoughts?
