My Name is Earl Recap: Our Cops is On

While Sundays at the Crab Shack are typically pretty bad days, because the food is running out and the keg is running dry, there are occasionally good days, and every few months, things in Camden County pick up significantly when someone (often Randy) notices that a very special show is coming on the television that day. For it seems that a while back, Cops was filmed, and while not everyone made the show, it makes everyone feel a little better inside, knowing that their little corner of the world made the big time, if only for a short while.

The episode opens with an officer being followed on her routine patrol (the officer is played by Kathy Kinney - this is the first time she's seen on the show - perhaps because of what happens, she isn't employed by the police department any longer), and she is called out to a domestic disturbance at the trailer park, suspecting that it's the Hickeys. Sure enough, Joy is mad at Earl because he'd rather go stealing stuff with Randy than use some of the new adult novelties that she has bought.

When the officer notices that he's holding a box of garage door openers, and asks him about a string of garage robberies, he takes off on a bicycle. She heads off in pursuit, but can't catch him, so she goes on patrol again. Later, she catches Earl and Randy robbing a garage, but while Randy takes off, she pursues Earl through the house, and he comes around through the front door and steals the car. This is perhaps why she isn't employed as a police officer any longer.

Earl then takes the car back to Joy as a present, and they run around town intimidating people - notably one of Earl's ex-girlfriends. Then they have sex in the back seat, but they get caught by another officer, who incidentally is the same one who lost his badge in the Stole a Badge episode (no word on if this is before or after that happened - I suspect before, but I don't know for certain).

Darnell even shows up, though it was before he met everyone - he was living with his grandmother, who called in a noise complaint. She is proud of his gardening skills (which means he's growing lots of marijuana), and as the police show up, he heads out the window with a couple of his prize-winning plants, but he eventually gets caught because he hid in a pile of leaves, but his hair stuck out the top. Since he was dropped off previously, it would seem that this isn't why he's in the witness protection program - but it may be a clue to his past, nonetheless.

Many of the rest of the regulars of the Crab Shack also appear in the episode, but it's Earl and Randy who are all over, trying to not get caught, but since they show up so often, it's pretty obvious that they are up to something. Patty the Prostitute (Dale Dickey) pops up quite often as well, though she's never "engaged" with a client - she does have her hand stuck in a soda machine one time, because a client likes to be with dead people. That was just odd.

All in all, one of the better episodes that's aired in quite some time.
