According to Jim Recap: Good Grief
Cheryl finds out that her uncle died, and Jim has a really hard time trying to figure out just why she's so upset about it. After all, she wasn't nearly as upset when her dad died. Then it occurs to him - she's trying to milk it. She's trying to put on over on him, and get some free sympathy out of this! Dana was way closer to their uncle and she's been over it for weeks. He'll see about this, and get out of it in no time.
Unfortunately, it seems that once again, Jim has things wrong. Maybe he shouldn't listen to Andy. Or himself. When he tries to turn the tables on Cheryl, she turns them right back on him, and she ends up sending him all over the state (states, technically) to get her needs met. He even goes to Iowa for ice cream!
In the end, however, things work out when Jim admits that perhaps he was wrong, and Cheryl admits that she knew that he was wrong - and just maybe she went a little far in sending him as far as she did for ice cream.
The problem was that Cheryl is finally getting the chance to grieve over her father. When her dad died, things were so hectic with the kids running everywhere, and her mom losing it, that she just didn't have the time that she needed to really say her goodbyes. Now she has that time, and the memories that she has of her uncle all involve her dad. So she's going to deal with it in her own time. Jim's just going to have to deal with that and give Cheryl the time she needs.
