According to Jim Recap: Deliverance

Jim and Ryan wait nervously to for the baby to arrive - well, Ryan is nervous. I don’t think that Jim is ever nervous. Ryan’s main concern is that he won’t be able to handle a baby, especially when it’s screaming. So Jim decides to demonstrate by wrapping it up tightly to make it feel comfortable, and what better model than Andy?

Should the baby continue to go on and on, then there’s just one thing that you can do - give it a bottle. It’s not suggested that you give the baby a beer bottle, but in this case that’s all they have, so the swaddled Andy gets one and he shuts right up. Perfect. It looks like Ryan is a natural!

Jim doesn’t do so well on the next round, however. Ryan has the chance to gain some exposure for his practice by delivering the baby of a celebrity. The only catch is that he has to go to a war-torn country (named “Booty”) in Africa to do so. Dana isn’t so keen on the idea, but Jim convinces Ryan that it’s the thing to do.

Quick now, whose advice do you think Ryan should follow? You’re probably right. Whose advice do you think he did take? If you said Jim, then you’re probably right again. So Ryan heads off to Africa to deliver the baby of a celebrity, since he’ll only be gone for a couple of weeks and Dana isn’t due for five. And while everything is looking good and he’s on his way home… war breaks out.

Apparently the celebrity gets out, as does the medical team. But not Ryan. Somehow he’s trapped. But this poor country does have a decent Internet connection that he can use to send video messages. Go figure. My personal take is that Ryan may get written out of the script entirely. It’s not that he’ll be missed much, since there are only ten or so episodes left, but it leaves Dana as a single mother. But what do I know?

In any case, since it was Jim’s bright idea to send Ryan halfway around the world in Dana’s time of need, he gets the duty to stand by her side during labor, and this is when Dana finds out Jim’s secret. It seems that he wasn’t having to work when Cheryl was in labor. He was terrified. And he tries to get out of it this time too, but a gurney holding a guy gushing blood is the only thing that keeps him in the room.

But once he’s stuck, he’s stuck, and manages to make it through the delivery, leaving Dana with a bouncing boy, who Jim promptly tries to corrupt. No word on Ryan just yet. I guess we’ll have to wait to see if he makes it out alive.
