Close to Home Recap: Hoosier Hold 'Em

A high-stakes college poker game turns into something more when one of the participants stops off to rob a bank on his way to a movie. Sounds a little strange, doesn't it? Well, it gets a little more interesting when the would be outlaw is arrested while riding his bike home later that night, and he then declines a plea deal when he doesn't want to stand up in front of the court because he doesn't want his parents to find out about what he did.

It's not that they know, obviously. But he doesn't want to have to stand up in front of them and tell everyone that he robbed a bank. So he turns down a plea deal. Lucky for him his parents are understanding, and they put up the cash to get him out on bail. Unfortunately, he turns up dead before he can make it to his next court date. Things just got a lot more interesting.

Annabeth and the crew try and figure out just why he turned up dead - it seems odd that the prime suspect in a bank robbery would suddenly be a murder victim. I mean the odds of that have to be astronomical. So they start digging. As they do, they find that the friendly game that he was into wasn't so friendly after all. In fact, it was an invite-only game, and you had to keep your mouth shut about what was going on.

What's worse is that the operator of the game had recently been accused of cheating by one of the other players, and he was trying to get the word out. That, and his ex-girlfriend had been trying to break it off with him for a while, but it turns out that he kept strong-arming her, so she was afraid of him.

A little more digging into this not-so-friendly game and it seems that the proceeds from the Sunday night game were being funneled into the guy's mom's non-profit every Monday morning, so as not to draw attention to the large amounts of cash. Sweet deal. But it was the camera setup in the room above that really drew attention, and at first it seemed like the dad was in on it too.

But after a little more pressure was applied, it turned out that it was the ex-girlfriend. You see, she actually was sweet on the now dead bank robber, and that's what caused the friction in the first place. She had told him that she was going to get kicked out of school because she didn't have any money, and her knight in shining armor stole the money from the bank for her - not for the game. When he got out on bail, she confessed all, including the set-up for cheating, and that's when he went to confront the crooked operator. That is what lead to his death.
