Rome Recap: Heroes of the Republic

While last week's episode had a bit of action what with Pullo and Vorenus rescuing the children and all, this time around there isn't so much. It's more about strategy, and there's plenty of it.

Octavian the Elder has made his way back to the city, and with him those forces that are loyal to him. Unfortunately, it seems that he doesn't have too many men on his side, so something is going to have to give. He'll probably have to make up with Antony if things don't break his way soon.

Speaking of Antony, the Senate sends some soldiers up to take him out, but it looks like the soldiers don't really like the Sentors much (or they like Antony better), because they don't even put up a fight. As soon as they get to his camp, they tell Antony - who seems to have forgotten a razor - that they're on his side, and they'll do what he says. Oh well. Maybe the Senate can find some more people to fight on their side, or maybe Brutus will return one of these days with some people to defend Rome from Octavian and Antony.

Back in Rome, Vorenus and Pullo have given the children a lovely new place to live on the Aventine, which as you surely know is the perfect place for children to grow up. And speaking of the place, Gaia has made the decision to make her move, which she does by bedding Vorenus - but then Vorenus wants to pay her, and she doesn't take kindly to that, so I suspect we'll see something more from that in the future.

Just as things get interesting with the children and they have decided to run away, they run into Lyde, who is cleaning the temple or something, and she tells them that they must be nice to their father, so they go back home with their tails tucked between their legs. Their father, meanwhile, has pledged his sword to Octavian, since Antony is missing in action. But if Antony comes back, he'll take it back. It sounds like the playground at recess.

The final player in this episode is none other than Atia, who is trying like crazy to make sure that she doesn't lose her power, and she manages to get her son to see that his troops are no match for Brutus (if he ever does return), and the only hope is to join forces with Antony before he does. I understand that the new, elder model of Octavian is necessary for war, but Octavian the Younger was a much better actor when it came to thoughtfulness. This guy looks like he'd lose a battle of wits to a brick wall.

But to his credit, he does march to meet Antony, and the two join up to return to Rome and take on Brutus. Perhaps we'll actually see some action soon. The preview seems to indicate that, at any rate.
