Grease: You're the One That I Want Recap: The Remaining Contestants Perform
In last week's show, I accurately predicted the bottom four for this week - Juliana Hansen, Kathleen Monteleone, Jason Celaya and Kevin Greene. I neglected to mention who I thought would go home. Whoops. I'll try to remember for the future. Before we get to the elimination, it's time for some singing.
This week, it's time for some duets. Each contestant will be paired up with a contestant of the opposite sex. For those having a problem following, that means one potential Danny with one would-be Sandy. Then they will team up to sing a song, and rated on their performance. However, singers are still rated individually, even though they sing together. So it's a little strange. I understand this is (likely) a one-off show, but it's just a little strange.
First up, Chad Doreck and Allie Schulz, singing Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. David Ian provided one of the best lines on reality television ever, calling them theatrical viagra. Chad's Take: It was a good job by both singers. Well done, and both should advance next week.
Austin Miller and Laura Osnes were next, with I Don’t Know Much. Laura was teased because of her engagement to someone "back home". Guest judge Jon Secada thought they had great personality. Chad's Take: Laura's performances continue to impress, and I think she may have taken over the lead for Sandy, if she didn't already have it. But Austin really needs to step up. While he has the slow, simmering songs absolutely nailed, he needs some pep. Some spark. Something.
The third duet of the night came courtesy of Max Crumm and Ashley Spencer, who were singing It Takes Two. While David Ian liked Ashley's performance, Kathleen Marshall loved playful Max. Chad's Take: Ashley is good, and this is a square performance for #2 in the competition. But it was Max' performance that was impressive. Though I don't know if I'm a Slacker Backer, I'm getting there. The guy is just getting better every week.
Derek Keeling and Kate Rockwell gave us their rendition of From This Moment for the next duet. David Ian tells Derek that he's good, but he's just not showing the "wow" factor. Kate, on the other hand, has the "wow" factor, but she isn't letting people in by showing her emotion. Chad's Take: I actually agree on this one. I don't have much opinion on Derek, he's just middle-of-the-pack. I really like Kate, but the more this competition goes on, I think that she may be better suited for American Idol. She has the chops. She just isn't bringing it all home.
The bottom four sings their elimination song, which doesn't really matter - there is no way that the judges make their call on a few seconds on a live stage - and the judges decide to save Kevin Greene and Kathleen Monteleone, who sing the final duet, Something to Talk About. David Ian thinks that Kevin's days are numbered, while Jim Jacobs thinks that Kathleen has lost her innocence, and needs to bring it back. Chad's Take: I understand that they were the last group, and had to go through the elimination round. But these two were easily the worst in the bunch.
The prediction: In the bottom four next week, I see Kevin and Kathleen for sure. In fact, I pick them to go home. Joining them, I am going out on a limb and picking Kate. It's not that she isn't good, as she is quite good. But I don't think she fits, so I think she will be in the bottom four, though I do think she will be saved. That last person is tough though. I think I'll pick Austin.
Update: The bottom four were actually Chad, Kate, Kathleen and Kevin. The judges decided to save Chad and Kathleen. How many weeks will Kathleen be in the bottom before she gets the boot?
