Grease: You're the One That I Want Recap: Frankie Avalon Performs with the Sandys
On the prior episode, Chad and Kathleen were saved by the judges from having to go home. This week, Frankie Avalon joins the panel as the remaining Sandys sing their hearts out. Presumably since only the girls are singing this week, there will only be two people in the bottom next week. If there are still four, then only one person won't be in the bottom group!
That's the strangest thing about this show is the unpredictability. On one hand, that is okay. Not knowing what comes next isn't entirely bad. You want to watch to see what happens. But on the other hand, it's just bizarre. It seems like they change things every week and so it's hard to get it down. On American Idol, they keep you guessing as to who is going to leave, but the format is basically the same. Here they announce it at the end, in the beginning, it's four people, it's two people, your vote counts, except when it doesn't. It's just strange. Oh well. On with the show.
Ashley Spencer started things off with These Boots Are Made for Walkin', to which Kathleen Marshall asked for a bit more passion. Chad's Take: I can agree. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't great.
Allie Schulz was up next with It’s Oh So Quiet, and David Ian thinks that the only problem may be her acting. Chad's Take: I have to say that Allie may have the best smile in the bunch. But I don't know if that will carry her.
Laura Osnes turned the lights down and sang a sultry rendition of Fever. While it may or may not be a song for this musical, David Ian said it was a hard song, and he was glad she pulled it off. Jim Jacobs said she took the competition to a new level. Chad's Take: I agree with Jim. This was easily the best song of the night, and though it's hard to imagine Laura as Sandy, after this performance, it's hard to imagine any of the other girls in the role.
At this point, the bottom four from last week sang their song (Blue Moon), and Chad, Kate, Kathleen and Kevin waited to see who the judges would decide to save. In the end, they decided that it would be Chad and Kathleen, sending Kate and Kevin to pack their bags. While I don't really disagree, it's sad to see Kate go. She was good - perhaps just not suited for this role.
With that, the rest of the night could proceed.
Kathleen Monteleone, freshly saved, sang Let’s Hear It For The Boy. David Ian said that he still loves her acting, but her vocals needed to improve. Chad's Take: That was an interesting comment, because it was Kate's acting that probably lost her the singoff, while her vocals were solid. In any case, Kathleen was rather poor. It was okay, but for a fun, fluffy song, she could have done much better.
The Prediction: Going on the assumption that we'll see two in the bottom next week, I'd pick Ashley and Kathleen, with Kathleen (finally) going home.
Update: It was actually Allie and Kathleen in the bottom two, but at least the judges decided to save Allie and dump Kathleen. She may have had the acting ability, but her vocals just weren't cutting it.
